Book Description
In The Practice of Her Profession, Susan Butlin draws on unpublished letters and family memoirs to recount Carlyle's personal and professional life. She explores Carlyle's artistic influences, her relationships with artist colleagues and encounters with the cultural worlds of Paris, New York, and early twentieth-century Canada, and provides a detailed examination of Carlyle's paintings. Butlin's vivid description of the artistic life of women of this era, from access to art training to the important role of women's art societies, introduces readers to Carlyle's many accomplished contemporaries - Helen McNicoll, Mary Reid, Laura Muntz, Sarah Holden, Sydney Tully, Elizabeth McGillivray Knowles, and others.

Book Description
Australia's distinctive landscape and sunny climate gave Australian Impressionism an intensity and radiance remarkable even in the international setting as the genre swept through the world's art communities during the second half of the 19th century. This book focuses on the first 15 years of the movement and follows five artists step-by-step. The story told in the Spring 2007 exhibition and in this catalog focuses on Charles Conder, Fred McCubbin, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, and Jane Sutherland. The material includes several thematic subjects, such as portraiture by Roberts and Streeton, and European symbolism. The art sometimes is anecdotal and contains a narrative. Australian plein air painters were interested in the way light evoked a particular emotion or mood and how to capture a fleeting moment within a short amount of time. These young artists saw themselves as leaders against the forces of conservatism and parochialism and stayed current with what was happening on the world stage. In response to a scathing review of their first exhibition, they wrote to the critic that they were 'working towards the development... of a great school of painting in Australia.' Among many lasting contributions of these painters, Jane Sutherland advanced the professional standing of women artists of her time.

In the early decades of the twentieth century, British art was enlivened by a wide variety of imaginative attempts to take painting and sculpture outside the boundaries of the gallery. Some of the works were commissioned by architects as integral parts of new buildings.

Book Description
From inauspicious beginnings in the kinetoscope parlors and nickelodeons to the movie palaces of the golden era, and finally to the pared down multiplexes of today, this is the history of motion picture viewing in the nation's capital and vicinity. The research is supported by numerous interviews. The book includes a 200-page listing of all the movie theaters in the area past and present, with data such as location, dates of operation, architect, and seating capacity, as well as a summary of each theater's history and current status. Maps, drawings and photographs (most of which have never before been published) round out this comprehensive study.
