Book Description
This publication presents a framework for a safe system of work for operations at incidents involving tunnels and underground structures. It provides a robust yet flexible insight that can be adapted to the nature, scale and requirements of the incident. Incidents involving tunnels and underground structures may place significant demands on local fire and rescue services and have often required a national co-ordinated response from across the country. This type of incident may generate intense media attention where the operations of the emergency services are rigorously scrutinised. Whilst much of this attention is approving it will invariably focus on the preparedness of the emergency services and their operational effectiveness.

Book Description
This generic risk assessment examines the hazards, risks and control measures relating to fire and rescue personnel, the personnel of other agencies and members of the public when attending incidents in tunnels and underground structures. For the purposes of this generic risk assessment a tunnel or underground structure is defined as a natural or manmade structure, where all or part is below ground level or covered, to where people can resort to for work, pleasure or transit. This includes underpasses, or any associated shafts, but excludes basements. The locations can range from a strategic transport tunnel such as the Channel Tunnel to a utilities tunnel that may allow for occasional access for maintenance purposes. Included within the scope of this generic risk assessment are: (i) Tunnels for transportation (eg road, rail, pedestrian, waterways, cycle); (ii) Tunnels for utilities (eg cabling, water supply and drainage, gas, steam, oil); (iii) Manmade and natural underground structures (eg caves, mines, bunkers, storage facilities, military installations); (iv) Tunnels under construction (eg bored tunnels, cut and cover technique, sprayed concrete lining, or undergoing significant refurbishment).

Book Description
Major incidents involving hazardous materials in the United Kingdom are rare. However smaller scale incidents involving hazardous materials are more prevalent and these may require a response from any fire and rescue service in England. The Fire and Rescue Service Operational Guidance - Incidents involving hazardous materials provides guidance that can be adapted to the nature, scale and requirements of the incident. The aim of the guidance is to promote common principles, practices and procedures that will support the fire and rescue service to resolve incidents involving hazardous materials safely and efficiently.

Book Description
Incidents involving rescue from road vehicles are dramatically increasing in frequency. There are some 3500 deaths on the road each year, with 35,000 serious injuries. Modern motor vehicles are becoming safer for occupants, due to advancement in technology, so persons are more likely to survive high impact speeds, but are also more likely to become entrapped. The Fire and Rescue Service, as the primary rescue service, requires national guidance to ensure a similar standard of response anywhere in the UK. This manual is designed to highlight current best practice with regard to vehicle rescue techniques and first responder trauma care. Each chapter forms an independent reference source, but the publication as a whole forms a complete guide. Chapters cover: vehicle design and construction; dealing with incidents; safety procedures; operational procedures; extrication equipment; medical considerations and trauma care; Integrated Personal Development System (I.P.D.S.). Appendices cover: Highways Agency/Fire and Rescue Service memorandum of understanding; training and general information; and emergency services personnel (ESP) aide mâmoire. The CD-ROM, "Vehicle extrication techniques", is a multi media guide to rescue tool handling and extrication techniques.
