Why Are Some Countries Richer Than Others?
Author: Jesus Felipe
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 143790565X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 41
Book Description
Provides evidence of a problem with the influential testing and assessment of Solow¿s (1956) growth model proposed by Mankiw et al. (1992) and a series of papers evaluating the latter. First, the assumption of a common rate of technical progress maintained by Mankiw et al. (1992) is relaxed. Solow¿s model is extended to include the different levels and rates of technical progress of each country. This increases the explanatory power of the cross-country variation in income/capital of the OECD countries to over 80%. The estimates of the parameters are statistically significant and take the expected values and signs. Second, the estimates merely reflect a statistical artifact. This has serious implications for the possibility of actually testing Solow¿s growth model. Illus.

International Financial Policy and Economic Development
Author: Graham Bird
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1349085790
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 364
Book Description
This book focuses on the international financial problems of developing countries and the ways in which international financial policy might be used to alleviate them. A strong theme that emerges is that developing countries cannot be treated as a homogenous group from the viewpoint of their international financial problems. At the very least, a distinction needs to be drawn between the newly industrialising countries of Latin America and South-east Asia and the low income countries of Africa and Asia.

The Politics of Development Co-operation
Author: Lisa Aubrey
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134745257
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
First Published in 2004. The Politics of Development Cooperation interrogates the politics of interorganizational development cooperation, examining issues of power, autonomy, and dependence. Focusing on Kenya and in particular on Maendeleo Ya Wanawake (MYWO), the largest national women’s organization, and its partners in its relational environment, this book probes the relationships between foreign donors, grassroots development organizations and governments. Aubrey examines whether it is possible for the North and the developing world to be engaged in genuine development partnerships, the influence resource contributions, financial and technical, have on agenda formulation and compromises, and whether organizations such as MYWO are truly NGOs, as they claim to be, or whether they remain an extension of the state exploited by patriarchal party politics. Gender is central to the analysis of this book, with issues reflecting and reintroducing the politics of unequal resources in development cooperative partnerships. Differences in status among women are also systematically examined because the politics of development affect elite and grassroots women differently.
