Milka challenges the present scholarly consensus that there exist two different versions of The Art of Fugue (the Autograph and the Original Edition) and argues that Bach had considered four versions, of which only two are apparent and have been discussed so far. Only Bach’s illness and death prevented him from fulfilling his plan and publishing a fourth, conclusive version of his opus.

The Ashgate Research Companion to Johann Sebastian Bach provides an indispensable introduction to the Bach research of the past thirty-fifty years. It is not a lexicon providing information on all the major aspects of Bach's life and work, such as the Oxford Composer Companion: J. S. Bach. Nor is it an entry-level research tool aimed at those making a beginning of such studies. The valuable essays presented here are designed for the next level of Bach research and are aimed at masters and doctoral students, as well as others interested in coming to terms with the current state of Bach research. Each author covers three aspects within their specific subject area; firstly, to describe the results of research over the past thirty-fifty years, concentrating on the most significant and controversial, such as: the debate over Smend's NBA edition of the B minor Mass; Blume's conclusions with regard to Bach's religion in the wake of the 'new' chronology; Rifkin's one-to-a-vocal-part interpretation; the rediscovery of the Berlin Singakademie manuscripts in Kiev; the discovery of hitherto unknown manuscripts and documents and the re-evaluation of previously known sources. Secondly, each author provides a critical analysis of current research being undertaken that is exploring new aspects, reinterpreting earlier assumptions, and/or opening-up new methodologies. For example, Martin W. B. Jarvis has suggested that Anna Magdalena Bach composed the cello suites and contributed to other works of her husband - another controversial hypothesis, whose newly proposed forensic methodology requires investigation. Fugue - EBENEZER PROUT - PREFACE - THERE IS probably no branch of musical conlposition in which theory is more widely, one might almost say hopelessly, at variance with practice than in that which forms the subject of the present volume. In Harmony, we are frequently neeting with cases in which the rules of the old text-books need inuch modification but with regard to Fugue there are few indeed of the old precepts are not continually, not to say systenatically violated by the greatest masters. The reason for this is no doubt that the standard authorities on the subject, Fux and Marpurg, treated it from the point of view of the seventeenth century, and that most of their successors, such as Cilerubini and Albrechtsberger to name two of the most illustrious, have in the main adopted their rules, tnking little or no account of the reformation, amounting almost to a reconstruction, of the fugue at the lzands of J. S. Bach. Somewhat more liberality of tone will be found in the treatises of Anclr6, Richter, and Lobe but nut one of these, excepting Lobe, has taken Bachs work as the starting point for his investigations. Lobe, on the other hand, is too revolutionary he ever abolishes the names subject and answer, using instead the terms first imitation, second imitation, c. When we find a distinguished theorist like saying that Bach is not a good inodel because he allows himself too many exceptions, and are informed that one of the principal Gerinarl teachers of counterpoint is in the habit of telling his pupils that there is not a single correctly written fugue among Bachs Forty- Eight, surely it is high time that an earnest protest were entered against a system of teaching nrliich places in a kind of Expurgatorius the worlts of the greatest fugue writer that the world has ever seen. In writing the present treatise, the author has consulted all the standard authorities, but as may be inferred from what has just been said has followed none. He has proceeded on the salsle principles which have guided him in all the preceding volumes of this series, and has gone to the works of the great composers themselves...........

Ferruccio Busoni as Architect of Sound presents the composer as an innovator inspired not only by past musical traditions but also by a contemporary interest in experimentalism. In the twentieth-century, Busoni wrote pieces where sound radiates from different directions, created montage formal structures, and freely used all twelve pitches of the chromatic scale without avoiding consonances. This book reveals how he also applied his understanding of tangible architectural spaces, buildings, and floor plans to his music, reconciling the spatial and temporal divide in music through an interdisciplinary approach. His innovation prompted and inspired new trends in pitch organization, the spatialization of sound, and the expansion of formal structures. Transcending physical boundaries of compositional innovation, Busoni also engaged in a rich exchange of ideas with contemporary architects and artists.
