Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets: April 1957 Production of sisal is more widespread than that of the other hard fibers. In 1956 roughly 61 percent was produced in Africa, 31 percent in the western Hemisphere, and 8 percent in Asia. The most important sisal-producing country is British East Africa with million pounds or M6 percent of the total sisal in 1956. Pro duction is continuing on a rising trend, and is now about double the prewar average. Plantations are large and well organized, and produce a good grade of fiber. Practically all of the crop is exported. Brazil is the most important sisal producing country in the western Hemisphere. In 1956 the output was 2h2.5 million pounds or 22 percent of the world supply. The industry has developed from a negligible output in 193h-38. Much of the Brazilian sisal was used within the country during early producing years, but exports were about equal to production in 1956. Excerpt from Natural Fibers in Nonwoven Manufacture Use of manmade fibers has weakened the competitive position of natural fibers in conventional textile production. As a result, cotton producers have an important stake in development of new sources of demand for natural fibers. Since the introduction of nonwovens in the thirties, and especially in the postwar era, the market for bonded fiber fabrics has increased rapidly. The new processes have brought increased efficiency in fabric manufacture by eliminating expensive spinning and weaving. Development of nonwoven fabrication has Opened a new market for great quantities of raw materials. If cotton captures a significant share of this market it has a potential for large growth in future sales. Nonwoven fabric production, defined broadly for this study (see p. L), exceeded 1 billion pounds in 1967. Bonded fiber fabrics made up 9.h percent of this total; felts and punched and needled materials, percent; and padding materials, percent. During the last decade, bonded fiber fabrics generated most of the enthusiasm about the dynamic and exciting potential of the nonwoven industry. Excerpt from Ramie Fiber Production Ramie fiber is a bast fiber obtained from the inner bark of the ramie stem. Some other bast fibers are flax, hemp, jute, and sunn. Ramie fiber has a tensile strength greater than any of these fibers and has more elasticity and ability to 'withstand torsion than flax or hemp with which there are available comparative tests. Cotton fiber is a seed hair, and its origin permits different physical characteristics. Cotton is much weaker in tensile strength than ramie but is able to withstand torsion much better. Their elasticity is about equal. Raw silk, although weaker in tensile strength than ramie, surpasses ramie and even cotton in elasticity and torsion characteristics. Excerpt from Cotton and Other Vegetable Fibres: Their Production Utilisation Among the industrial problems arising from the war, one of the most important is that of the future of our textile industries, especially in relation to the sources from which they derive their raw materials and the possibility of drawing these to a larger extent than was the case before the war from countries within the Empire. The subject is one that has engaged the close attention of the Imperial Institute for many years, during which it has investigated the possibilities of fibre production in all those British countries which seem to present chances of success. The Institute has given assistance, through experimental investigations conducted in its laboratories and through the supply of technical information, to Governments of the countries concerned, to producers overseas and to merchants and manufacturers at home. A very large amount of information has been collected on questions connected with the experimental production and value of fibres in various countries, much of which has been published in the "Bulletin of the Imperial Institute" and in special reports. In connection with cotton cultivation especially the work of the Imperial Institute has been continuous and has been conducted in intimate association with experimental cultivation overseas, and with the operations of the British Cotton Growing Association. In these subjects of cotton cultivation alone the Institute has issued a large number of special reports. The increased attention which must shortly be given to extending these sources of supply of cotton and other industrial fibres rendered it desirable that a general summary should be published of the position and prospects of the world's production and utilisation of fibres, and it has been therefore decided to issue the present volume in the Imperial Institute series of Handbooks to the Commercial Resources of the Tropics.
