Book Description
Irving Klaw was the legendary New York-based mail order merchant who from 1949 onwards produced thousands of films, photographic sets and printed booklets based on themes of fetishism, bondage, and sado-masochism. Although Klaw's most enduring artistic legacy arguably lies in his pioneering publishing work in the field of bondage illustration, he will always be best-known for his discovery and promotion of the iconic bondage model who went on to be famous throughout the cool world -- Betty Page. Through thousands of BDSM-themed photographs, as well as numerous short films, Page would become not only the superstar of the Klaw catalogue but, retrospectively, the most iconic fetish model of all time. THE WILD WORLD OF BETTY PAGE gathers together 80 classic photographs of Page, never before published in a single volume, which cover almost every aspect of her modelling work with Klaw. From sexy pin-ups in lingerie and fetish-wear to more intense scenes of sado-masochism, bondage, spanking and cat-fights, this anthology presents the essential Betty Page. The photographs selected also feature many of Klaw's other regular bondage models.

Book Description
Was modern primitivism complicit with the ideologies of colonialism, or was it a multivalent encounter with difference? Examining race and modernism through a wider and more historically contextualized study, Sweeney brings together a variety of published and new scholarship to expand the discussion on the links between modernism and primitivism. Tracing the path from Dada and Surrealism to Josephine Baker and Nancy Cunard's Negro: An Anthology, she shows the development of négrophilie from the interest in black cultural forms in the early 1920s to a more serious engagement with difference and representations in the 1930s. Considering modernism, race, and colonialism simultaneously, this work breaks from traditional boundaries of disciplines or geographic areas. Why was the primitive so popular in this era? Sweeney shows how high, popular, and mass cultural contexts constructed primitivism and how black diasporic groups in Paris challenged this construction. Included is research from original archival material from black diasporic publications in Paris, examining their challenges to primitivism in French literature and state-sponsored exoticism. The transatlantic movement of modernism and primitivism also is part of this broad comparative study.

Book Description
The photobook visually and materially contextualizes arrangements of photographs and brings them into a sensually tangible form. The book format, the materiality of the paper, and the type of binding have just as much of an effect on the viewer as the selection of images, their positioning in the layout, typography, and the texts. The artist and theorist Bettina Lockemann provides an approach to the medium from a research perspective: considering the photobook as an independent subject of art theories, her phenomenological discussion complements methodological lines of thought. An important contribution to the photobook as an independent field of research, Lockemann elaborates precise terms for analyzing this medium. Through a practice-based examination of contemporary photobooks, this guide emphasizes the status of the photobook as an artwork in its own right. BETTINA LOCKEMANN (*1971) is an artist and scholar specialized in artistic documentary photography. After studying art photography and media art in Leipzig and earning a PhD in art history at the ABK Stuttgart she was professor for practice and theory of photography at the HBK Braunschweig for five years. She lives in Cologne.
