La féminisation de la profession médicale est un phénomène quantitativement documenté depuis plusieurs dizaines d'années, principalement par le servicce statistique public (DREES, INSEE, etc.) téleguidé en cela par l'Etat. La volonté étatique est de documenter les évolutions démographiques, dont la féminisation de la profession de médecin, dans le but notamment de réguler au mieux la répartition de l'offre de soin. Parallèlement à cette exploitation essentiellement statistique co-existe depuis le début des années 2000, une littérature en Sciences Humaines et Sociales (SHS) qui s'est attachée à problématiser la question de la féminisation médicale en allant au-delà de la simple constatation descriptive et en essayant de défnir et identifier les causes et les conséquences de la féminisation du corps médical via la mobilisation de multiples concept parmi lesquels le « contrat de genre », I'ethos ou le « plafond de verre ». Cette revue de la littérature en SHS permet de dépasser l'écueil descriptif pur de la démographie médicale, de reconstruire l'évolution de la définition de la « féminisation médicale » et la façon dont elle a été perçue par ceux qui I'ont vécue en lui donnant une perspective historique qui tient compte de l'évolution des injonctions sociales et des normes qui I'ont accompagnée. Cette revue de la littérature est d'autant plus justifiée dans le contexte de réforme des modalités d'accès à la formation et à la spécialisation qui réintroduit des modalités d'évaluations orales pouvant potentiellenent exercer une influence importante sur une sélection genrée des étudiants.

Pendant des siècles, tous les médecins ont été des hommes. Ont-ils su faire abstraction de leur sexe pour décrire l'anatomie et la physiologie féminines ? On peut aisément démontrer que non. La définition qu'ils ont donnée de la "nature féminine" est toujours inspirée, consciemment ou non, par le souci d'établir ou de confirmer la supériorité masculine. Ils ont peu à peu construit un stéréotype de la féminité ; et ce stéréotype a reçu l'approbation de toute la société à partir de l'âge des Lumières. La définition médicale de la femme invitait à une domestication, pleine et entière du sexe féminin au service de la reproduction et de la famille. En outre les médecins-hommes ont totalement subordonné les femmes-soignantes : sages-femmes, infirmières, et même les premières femmes médecins. L'obstétrique, la gynécologie, et même la puériculture ont été ainsi confisquées par les hommes. La "nature féminine" a été livrée sans recours à la "science" masculine, pour le meilleur et pour le pire. Au seuil du XXe siècle, le progrès des connaissances et l'évolution sociale ont remis en cause la définition médicale de l'être féminin. Ensuite les femmes ont envahi des métiers dont les médecins les disaient incapables, y compris la profession médicale elle-même. Elles ont conquis la maîtrise de la génération. Le rapport entre la médecine et les femmes s'en trouve modifié, mais aussi la relation entre les sexes, la place et le rôle des femmes dans la société. Yvonne Knibiehler est professeur à l'Université d'Aix-Marseille. Elle a publié L'histoire des mères (1980), Nous, les assistantes sociales (1980), La beauté, pour quoi faire ?, en collaboration avec Catherine Fouquet, qui est professeur d'hypokhâgne à Aix-en-Provence.

Les femmes ont une place de plus en plus importante au sein de la profession médicale. Leurs luttes ont été passionnées et les conquêtes difficiles. Leur mode d'exercice s'adapte à l'évolution démographique de la population médicale. Les jeunes générations de femmes médecins s' orientent plus que leurs aînées vers la médecine générale libérale, se détournent de moins en moins du milieu rural et semi-rural et acceptent plus facilement une activité à temps plein. Elles gardent malgré tout un exercice beaucoup plus dépendant de leurs contraintes familiales que leurs confrères. Les patients, dans leur grande majorité, ont bien intégré la femme en tant que médecin et acceptent qu'elle aménage son temps de travail. On perçoit encore une réticence provenant essentiellement des patients hommes quant à la fréquentation des médecins femmes. Les comportements diffèrent en fonction de l'âge des patients, de leur lieu d'habitation et de leur appartenance à un groupe socio-professionnel.

The number of women practicing medicine in the United States has grown steadily since the late 1960s, with women now roughly at parity with men among entering medical students. Why did so many women enter American medicine? How are women faring, professionally and personally, once they become physicians? Are women transforming the way medicine is practiced? To answer these questions, The Changing Face of Medicine draws on a wide array of sources, including interviews with women physicians and surveys of medical students and practitioners. The analysis is set in the twin contexts of a rapidly evolving medical system and profound shifts in gender roles in American society. Throughout the book, Ann K. Boulis and Jerry A. Jacobs critically examine common assumptions about women in medicine. For example, they find that women's entry into medicine has less to do with the decline in status of the profession and more to do with changes in women's roles in contemporary society. Hippocrates' Woman demonstrates the role of Hippocratic ideas about the female body in the subsequent history of western gynaecology. It examines these ideas not only in the social and cultural context in which they were first produced, but also the ways in which writers up to the Victorian period have appealed to the material in support of their own theories. Among the conflicting tange of images of women given in the Hippocratic corpus existed one tradition of the female body which says it is radically unlike the male body, behaving in different ways and requiring a different set of therapies. This book sets this model within the context of Greek mythology, especially the myth of Pandora and her difference from men, to explore the image of the body as something to be read. Hippocrates' Woman presents an arresting study of the origins of gynaecology, an exploration of how the interior workings of the female body were understood and the influence of Hippocrates' theories on the gynaecology of subsequent ages.
