Excerpt from Coal Losses in Illinois Eleven fields in twenty - seven counties are discussed in this report, and represent nearly the whole of the coal output of Illinois, which amounts to between 60 and 88 million tons annually. In 1921 the out put was almost 70 million tons. Twenty mines were examined and data were procured from 131 mines, accounting for half of the coal mined. Omitting the Northern Illinois field, in which the longwall system of mining is employed, and where the extraction is 95 per cent, the losses in the other fields are much the same, and vary between 43 and 53 per cent, and average per cent. This means that, in the mining of tons, as in 1921, an amount almost equal to this total, namely tons, was lost. Pillars account for most of this loss, the average being 39 per cent; but the investigation showed that 32 per cent of this loss is avoidable. Therefore, instead of the extraction being 50 per cent, it should be 82 per cent. In south ern Illinois there is a rather large loss of roof coal - namely, 7 per cent; while in Peoria and Fulton counties there is a heavy loss of 15 per cent due to coal being left under water-bearing strata and wet and tender roof. Excerpt from Problem Sites: Lands Affected by Underground Mining for Coal in Illinois Early coal mining in Illinois consisted of digging in outcrops along river bluffs or stripping shallow overburden from seams near the surface. Such techniques resulted in very little refuse (waste coal and other debris) at the surface, as most coal was selected by hand without further processing. Modern mining practices incorporating continuous mining machines, as well as the demand for clean, processed coal, has resulted in current refuse rates of 20 to 50 percent of the deep mined coal. In 1974, the nation's coal industry generated about 130 million tons of coal mine refuse (schlick and Wahler Refuse produced by underground mines in Illinois totaled an estimated 8 to 15 million tons in 1975, or approximately million cubic yards. Coal preparation plants produce two types of refuse material gob and slurry. Coarse refuse (plus 28 sieve or referred to as gob, contains waste coal, rock, pyrites, or other materials of relatively large size. Excerpt from Hydrogeologic Aspects of Coal Mining in Illinois: An Overview Progressive drainage and rewetting during mining may weaken the mine roof and floor materials, and repeated wetting and drying could further weaken the rocks. For example, in the city of Streator, Illinois, sewage has been dumped into the old mine workings for many years and allowed to move later ally through the workings, discharging to the Vermilion River. Current studies undertaken to control the sewage discharge suggest that repeated wetting and drying will significantly reduce the strength of the rocks and therefore increase the incidences of mine subsidence. Thus, any change in the hydrogeologic regime of a mine, such as backfilling a dry mine with water (man-induced or natural) or pumping water from a mine which has filled, may weaken the rocks and precipitate increased rates of subsidence and sur face damage. Severe inundation does not occur in most deep coal mines in Illinois, and the depletion and drainage of aquifers in mine dewatering operations is generally not a problem. In areas of Illinois in which the Pennsylvanian series is the uppermost bedrock unit, the ground water becomes mineralized at an average depth of less than 100 meters (about 300 ft). Excerpt from Specific Gravity Studies of Illinois Coal The Object of this bulletin is to present the results of a study of (1) the effect of moisture upon the specific gravity of coal, and (2) the methods of determining the specific gravity of coal. The commercial aspects of the problem are discussed, and values are given for the specific gravity of coal from many of the mining districts of the State of Illinois. The specific gravity of bright and dull coal is also considered. The investigation was carried on under the direction of Professor H. H. Stock of the University of Illinois, who suggested the problem and whose advice and criticism were of great value. Experiments were conducted in the laboratories of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois, and field trips were made to the Vermilion county coal field, where samples of coal were collected from a number of mines. Other samples were obtained from various sources. The author is indebted to Professor E. A.
