Book Description
Presents a statistical analysis of propeller/ice interaction loading histories supplied in digital form as time series recorded on the Polar Star icebreaker propeller blade. The analysis was carried out with the purpose of estimating fatigue damage and fatigue life. Information on the fatigue life and damage prediction procedures is included. The final results are approximated by theoretical probability distributions. The experimental and analytical stress range distributions are presented in both graphical and numerical form.

Book Description
This report describes and presents results from a project carried out to measure the ice & propeller interaction loads on an icebreaker, and to determine the influence of design, operational & environmental parameters on the nature & magnitude of the ice loads. The project involved trials from December 1994 to January 1995 in Antarctica in 1-3 metre ice thickness using the US Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star. The starboard propeller blade was instrumented with strain gauges, a comprehensive ship instrumentation package was installed for monitoring propulsion machinery & ship operational parameters, and a specially developed underwater video set-up was installed for observing the instrumented propeller and the ice movement around it. Results are presented from about 1,200 propeller calibration & ice load events collected, parametric ice load dependency analyses of 728 events, and detailed analyses of 20 selected propeller/ice interaction events. An application-oriented interpretation of results was performed to allow the project results to be used as input for the international harmonization of Arctic machinery protection regulations.
