Book Description
Excerpt from The Farmers Scientific Manual There are only about sixty-six simple elements known to the chemist. Of these, and their various combinations, all matter, solid, liquid and gaseous, is composed. When an element is found occurring naturally, and not combined with another, it is said to exist free in nature. Nearly all Of the substances composing the vegetable, animal and mineral kingdoms, are combinations Of two or more elements. Matter is indestructible. The apparent destruction Of a substance is merely the breaking up of its elements and the formation of new compounds. Many of these elements have an attraction or affinity for each other; the rusting Of iron is merely the union of iron with oxygen which exists in air and water. Heat, light and electricity aid the union of these elements. It has been found that these elements are governed by laws in their union with each other, and that these laws, like those in other departments of nature, are uniform and constant in their operation. One Of these laws is, that elements always unite with each other in certain proportions by weight and volume; should there be an excess Of one element present, it will remain uncombined. The elements are divided into various classes, viz: those which exist as gases only, those which are liquid, and those which are solid. Book Description
Excerpt from The Culture of Farm Crops: A Manual of the Science of Agriculture, and a Hand-Book of Practice for American Farmers No farmer can be successful in the pursuit of his industry without a knowledge of the principles upon which the practice of it is founded. Every work of the farm has more or less of mystery attached to it. No other art, among all the industries of the human race is so intricate or has so many varying conditions and circumstances environing and affecting it. The soil, the season, the character of the plants grown, the time and manner of their cultivation; the air, water and mineral matters which furnish them with food; and many other things related to these; are all involved in an inextricable maze and mystery to the farmer who knows nothing of them or their relations to and reactions upon each other. But these mysteries are unfolded in the most beautiful and interesting manner, and the laws which relate to the growth of plants are seen to form a system which gradually developes - as the farmer progresses in this study - into form and method from which rules may be laid down for his guidance; or from which he may form his own rules and practice as any emergency may arise. When principles are known and understood, one may form his own practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
