Book Description
The Enchanted Castle is a children’s fantasy tale by Edith Nesbit, author of The Railway Children, Five Children and It plus many Others. The Enchanted Castle a country estate in the West Country of England (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset) seen through the eyes of three children, Jerry, Jimmy, and Kathy, who discover it while exploring during their school holidays in the early 1900’s. The lake, groves and marble statues, with white towers and turrets in the distance, make a fairy-tale setting, and then in the middle of the maze in the rose garden, they find a sleeping fairy-tale princess. The "princess" tells them that the castle is full of magic, and they almost believe her. She shows them the treasures of the castle, including a magic ring she says is a ring of invisibility, but when it actually turns her invisible she panics and admits that she is the housekeeper's niece, Mabel, and she was just play-acting. The children soon find that the ring has other magical powers (as all magical rings do) such as making the "Ugly-Wugglies" (Guy Fawkes style dummies they had made to swell the audience at one of their play-performances) come to life. They eventually discover that the ring is actually granting their own wishes, and that the disturbing results stem from their failure to specify those wishes precisely. The Enchanted Castle was written for both children and adults. It combines descriptions of the imaginative play of children, with a magic more muted than in her major fantasies. =============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: enchanted castle, west country, children’s fantasy, tale, folklore, myths, legends, Jerry, Jimmy, Kathy, school holidays, lake, groves, marble statues, white, gleaming, towers, turrets, explore, fairy-tale setting, maze, fairy tale princess, sleeping, asleep, castle, palace, magic, magic ring, invisibility, housekeeper, niece, mabel, play-acting, magical powers, ugly wuggly, ugly-wuggly, ugly wugglies, guy fawkes, contemporary fantasy, fiction, imagination, railway children, five children and it, Castle hall, magnificent, deceiver, head first, entrance, enchanted garden, red clue, across the grass, straight, breathless, result, game, question, candle, silver frame, mirror, shadow, bread and butter, missy, policemen, go home, stone beast, silver, sea chest, landing stage, stagger, water butt, eliza, dishevelled, breathless, french peck, lovely, blue-black hair, limp hand, telling lies, strange procession, pointed, painted, paper face, peer, pieces, hats, raised, crowded place, statue, monster lizard, tremble, swim, celestial picnic, eager, alert, very keen, American,

Book Description
The classic children's story about a young boy, his toy castle, and a magical adventure that reveals the true meaning of courage When his beloved caretaker Mrs. Phillips tells him she's leaving, William is devastated. Not even her farewell gift of a model medieval castle helps him feel better—though he has to admit it's fascinating. From the working drawbridge and portcullis to the fully-furnished rooms, it's perfect in every detail. It almost seems magical. And when William looks at the silver knight, the tiny figure comes to life in his hand—and tells him a tale of a wicked sorcerer, a vicious dragon, and a kingdom in need of a hero. Hoping the castle's magic will help him find a way to make his friend stay, William embarks on a daring quest with Sir Simon, the Silver Knight—but he will have to face his own doubts and regrets if he's going to succeed. William's story continues in The Battle for the Castle, available as a redesigned companion edition. Book Description
FANTASY CASTLE; A GAME OF THE IMAGINATION A good imagination on the part of the player makes some games more interesting and fun; some games require more. Some games require all you have to give and then some. School, out for the summer, has left these children with nothing to do. DAVE WOODS and ISAIAH SCOTT are bored until Dave's younger brother BRIAN, finds a game in a specialty shop down in old-town. The store itself is a mystery when the building seems to have been renovated overnight and opened for business. A game box, displayed in the front window appears to be the only item for sale. The boys pool their money to buy the game. While Isaiah and Brian are eager to play the game just for something to do, Dave's reaction is quite different. He feels an overwhelming need to play; almost as if he is being drawn to the game by invisible strings. The need proves almost more than he can handle, until after much delay, they finally sit down to play. Everything seems to go wrong at once, when the boys and Isaiah's sister HANNAH; the fourth player, are sucked into the game where a good imagination, proves to be the only tool of survival. Separated immediately by the choices each of them make, Isaiah, Brian and Hannah embark on an adventure; a journey of understanding, trust and friendship. While for Dave, his imagination has landed him in a world of fear, dark tunnels and nothing less than his worst nightmare. Always the one in control; some in his school have called him a bully; he now feels what it must be like to be on the other end. Too late, Dave finds out that the game is much more than imagination and that it won't let go until the right choices are made and past wrongs are righted. When the game is finally over Brian, Isaiah and Hannah have doubts about Dave and wonder if he really came back or has someone else returned to take his place. How would you play? Can you imagine playing a game where the game itself sets down the rules after you start?
