Book Description
Excerpt from Fans, Ventilation and Heating There are two types of fans in common use, known as the centrifugal fan or blower, and the disk fan or propeller. The former consists of a number of straight or slightly curved blades extending radially from an axis as shown in Fig. 1. When the fan is in motion, the air in contact with the blades is thrown outward by the action of centrifugal force and delivered at the outer circumference or periphery of the wheel. A partial vacuum is thus produced at the center of the wheel, and air from the outside flows in to take the place of that which has been discharged. Fig. 3 illustrates the action of a centrifugal fan, the arrows showing the path of the air. This type of fan is usually enclosed in a steel plate casing of such form as to provide for the free movement of the air as it escapes from the periphery of the wheel. An opening in the circumference of the casing serves as an outlet into the distributing ducts which carry the air to the various rooms to be ventilated, or to the furnaces in the case of mechanical draft. A fan with casing is shown in Fig. 2. The discharge opening can be placed in any position desired, either up, down, top horizontal, bottom horizontal, or at any angle. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ventilation Hand Book: The Principles and Practice of Ventilation as Applied to Furnace Heating; Ducts, Flues and Dampers for Gravity Heating; Fans and Fan Work for Ventilation and Hot Blast Heating As indicated by the title, the object of the volume is to place in convenient form, for ready reference, the under lying principles of warm-air heating and ventilation, to gether with simple methods for computing the sizes of the various parts of a system of this kind. Special care has been taken to keep all descriptions and mathematical work well within the understanding of the student and beginner. The subject matter is arranged in the form of questions and answers which serve to hold the interest of the reader more closely than the usual method of employing topics or headings. Book Description
Heating, ventilation and air conditioning is a technology that is concerned with indoor and vehicular environmental comfort. Its objective is to provide comfort and high indoor air quality. The technology develops on the principles of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer. Ventilation involves exchanging air in any space in order to control temperature as well as remove odors, dust, airborne bacteria, carbon dioxide, etc. It can be achieved mechanically by using an air handler, mechanical exhausts or ceiling fans, or naturally using operable windows, louvers or trickle vents. In central heating, water, steam or air is heated using a boiler, furnace or heat pump, and the resultant heat is transferred by the processes of convection, radiation or conduction to the living spaces in a house or building. Air conditioning and refrigeration involves cooling and humidity control through the removal of heat using heat transfer processes. This book is a compilation of chapters that discuss the most vital concepts about the technology of heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Such selected concepts that redefine the understanding of the crucial aspects of this technology including its design, analysis and control systems have been presented herein. It will serve as a valuable reference guide for architects, interior designers, professionals and students involved in this area of study.
