It is estimated that by the year 2010, 50 percent of the population of southeast Asia will be under 15 years of age. Based on a research project completed in 1993, this book provides a regional overview of the quality of life for these children, and is targeted not only at those with an academic and professional interest in child care and social policy, but also at the people in Southeast Asia and beyond who are generally unaffected by the concerns being highlighted and discussed, and remain untouched by questions relating to child care policy and practice. The book is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1, entitled"Needs, Rights and Injustices," serves as an introduction to the book, claiming that parents, whether married, cohabiting or single, wish to do their best for their children, and those who fail in their task are most often the victims of their poverty, upbringing, or environment. This chapter also provides information on different kinds of child care facilities in many different Southeast Asian countries. Chapter 2, "Asian Children in Context," provides information in statistical terms on the quality of life of Southeast Asian children. Topics discussed include population growth and family planning. Chapter 3, "Abuse, Neglect and Disease," discusses topics including street children, prostitution, children and war, children in affluent societies, and child suicides. This book was written with basically two objectives in mind. The first one was to provide a comprehensive description of the Indonesian family planning program during the New Order regime of Suharto. The second to explain the fertility transition that took place in Indonesia during the same period. The rationale behind the first objective is the rather unique character of the Indonesian family planning program as a national program, being part of both the New Orderís development effort-and-rhetoric and peoples everyday life. The extent to which it became part of peoples and especially womens everyday life in various ways, sets the Indonesian family planning program apart from comparable programs in Asia. The second objective is an ambitious one. From all the theoretical and anecdotal literature on fertility transition, particularly in Asia, it is clear that it is a complex phenomenon that cannot be captured in a simple model. Nevertheless, the dramatic fertility decline that took place in Indonesia during 1968-1998 begs for an attempt at explanation. In this book, fertility decline is placed against a background of social, cultural and economic change, and is related to the way the family planning program was designed and implemented. The question of the exact contribution of the family planning program to fertility decline is addressed but can never be fully answered. This is because the impact of the family planning program cannot be isolated from the influence of other factors, such as, for example, cultural change leading to a rise of age at marriage, womens higher levels of educational attainment, increased family income, and so on. As the book shows, Indonesia provides a rich context for studying fertility decline and its determinants. The contributors come from several countries and have different backgrounds. They have in common their professional involvement with family planning, fertility and social change in Indonesia and their love for the country and its people.

Balinese texts, temples, theatre performances and rituals, in seven essays, are placed into specific political contexts in an effort to gain a deeper understanding of the changing relations between state and society on the complex island of Bali. How have local communities been linked to various claimants to state sovereignty through Bali's history? What have been the forms and functions of the institutions that have joined peasants with kings and bureaucrats? How have these institutions changed and in what ways have they remained the same over the centuries? How have these relationships been represented by Balinese to themselves? And, how should research on these issues be carried further forward? The contributors to this volume—I Gusti Ngurah Bagus, Hildred Geertz, Henk Schulte Nordholt, Raechelle Rubinstein, David J. Stuart Fox, Adrian Vickers, and Carol Warren—represent the disciplines of anthropology, literature and history, but all of them cut creatively across disciplinary lines. In contrast to previous Bali research, these studies put more emphasis on historical background and pay close attention to local Balinese perspectives. Early and colonial history form the frame of several papers, while others deal with major changes in the recent past. While each paper taken alone has its own specialized concerns, if the set is read as a series an outline can be discerned, not only of Balinese history and culture, but also of some characteristic features of the new research on Bali being carried out in the 1980s. The interdisciplinary approach of this volume makes it challenging reading for a wider audience of Southeast Asianists.
