Book Description
The story is set in Rome in the early 4th century AD, during the time of the persecution of Christians under the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The heroine of the book is Fabiola, a young beauty from a noble Roman family. She is spoiled by her father Fabius, who cannot deny her anything. Fabiola seems to have everything, including a superior education in the philosophers, yet under the surface, she is not content with her life. One day, in a fit of rage, she attacks and wounds her slave girl Syra, who is a secret Christian. The proud, spoiled Roman girl is humbled by Syra's humility, maturity, and devotion to her in this situation, and a slow transformation begins, which finally culminates in her conversion to Christianity, brought on by Syra and of her own cousin Agnes, whom she adores and dotes on.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - A terrible shriek rang through the great Manor-house of Amesbury. It was preceded by a loud explosion, and there was agony as well as terror in the cry. Then followed more shrieks and screams, some of pain, some of fright, others of anger and recrimination. Every one in the house ran together to the spot whence the cries proceeded, namely, the lower court, where the armourer and blacksmith had their workshops. There was a group of children, the young people who were confided to the great Earl Richard and Countess Alice of Salisbury for education and training. Boys and girls were alike there, some of the latter crying and sobbing, others mingling with the lads in the hot dispute as to "who did it."

Book Description
Excerpt from Fabiola If, for instance, we take the first that we have named, we clearly draw out the following circumstances. She is evidently pursued by some heathen admirer, whose suit for her hand she repeatedly rejects. Sometimes she tells him that he is fore stalled by another, to whom she is betrothed 5 sometimes she describes this object of her choice under various images, repre senting him even as the object of homage to sun and moon. On another occasion she describes the rich gifts, or the beauti ful garlands with which he has adorned her, and the chaste caresses by which he has endeared himself to her. Then, at last, as if more importunately pressed, she rejects the love of perish able man, the food of death, and triumphantly proclaims herself the spouse of Christ. Threats are used, but she declares herself under the protection of an angel who will shield her. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
