The goal of equitable opportunities for student success in higher education remains a challenge, particularly with Latino students. To help combat the disadvantages faced by many non-traditional, low-income, and first-generation students, California community colleges established Extended Opportunity Programs & Services (EOP&S) programs on their campuses. The purpose of this study is to examine the specific elements within EOP&S perceived by participants to have an influence or impact on their persistence and success. The following research questions guided the study: 1. What barriers and inequities do Latino EOP&S students encounter in relation to their academic aspirations and outcomes? 2. How do cultural identity and self-efficacy beliefs impact the propensity for academic success in Latino students? 3. What activities embedded in the current EOP&S model support persistence? This particular research design utilized a quantitative research approach. A questionnaire was disseminated at a Northern California community college campus to 167 Latino EOP&S students. The survey questions solicited information on topics such as students' educational goals, perceptions on contacts with faculty and EOP&S staff, the extent of use and benefit from various services, and specific variables thought to be influential in student persistence decisions. The study adapted pre-existing scales to measure cultural identity attitudes, self-efficacy, and intent to persist. The basic concept and goal of this study was to examine the perceived impact of EOP&S practices on the persistence attitudes of its Latino participants. The study explored components of the EOP&S program, such as overall experiences and interactions with staff that may have an underlying impact on students' success. Findings showed that the surveyed students, in general, had positive cultural identity mindsets, relatively high self-efficacy, and cited a highly supportive environment from the EOP&S program and staff. Several instances of validating experiences and practices that align with critical race theory (CRT) and Latino critical theory (LatCrit) concepts were also identified within EOP&S practices. The majority of students who participated in the survey indicated high instances of validation and positive cultural-identity and self-efficacy attitudes. They felt strongly that their participation in EOP&S, especially through their interactions with counselors and advisors (Specialists), contributed to their ability to succeed. Emergent themes of cultural identity, self-efficacy, and barriers to success were also further discussed and tied to findings and related literature.

Latinos are underrepresented in the health sciences and are not receiving adequate academic counseling or advice in community colleges (Talamantes et al., 2016). Although programs, such as the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), are designed to help students academically, it is unclear what Latino pre-health students’ experiences are as participants of the EOPS program. The goal of this qualitative study was to identify the experiences of selected Latino pre-health community college students in the EOPS program and to understand what experiences these particular students encountered in pursuing a pre-health major. Study participants were recruited from one urban Northern California community college with a large Latino student population. Through seven one-on-one interviews and one focus group, this case study sought to engage EOPS Latino students in sharing their in-depth experiences, opinions, and points of view on how the messages communicated to them shaped their self-concepts and educational experiences in science. Critical race theory and community cultural wealth framework guided the analysis for this study. The qualitative analysis revealed five major themes that emerged from the interviews and focus group data. The five major themes that emerged from the research were (a) categorical programs safety net services, (b) classroom engagement and cultural awareness, (c) perception of community college rigor, (d) ethnically concordant science faculty, and (e) imposter syndrome and not belonging. The experiences of Latino pre-health students participating in student support programs, such as EOPS, may significantly enhance their opportunity to obtain a degree in the health science and eventually a health profession. Despite the large numbers of Latino pre-health students in the community college system, there are significant system-wide educational barriers to overcome. This study presents an opportunity for leaders at the community college level to examine the findings on how the EOPS program can contribute to the overall academic success of Latino students in the health sciences.

The attainment of higher education for Latinos has been a popular topic of discussion in current years. In less than 40 years, Latino students have gone from being an almost unobserved racial/ethnic group to being the largest and fastest growing racial/ethnic group in the United States (Humes, Jones, & Ramirez, 2011). In their senior year of high school, 53% of underrepresented students expect to receive a bachelor's degree compared to 90% of their peers. Only 31.9% of Latinos aged 18 to 24 enroll in higher education compared to 38% of African American, 43.3% White, and 62.2% Asian students (Pew Hispanic Center, 2011). California has the second lowest high school graduating rate for Latinos in the country. The Master Plan in California specifically outlines that the top 12.5% of all high school graduates are eligible for the University of California (UC) system (Solorzano & Ornelas, 2004). During the past 40 years, the Latino population has increased their graduation rate from 9% to only 11% (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). Therefore, improving the educational success of the Latino population is imperative to ensure America's future prosperity. The purpose of this study was to understand the role of family in the attainment of higher education for Latino students. Family composition and cultural expectations affect the decisions Latinos make as they pertain to higher education, regardless of their aspirations. Understanding the Latino culture is needed by educational leaders to tackle the barriers this population encounters through education. The mixed-methods study took place at a 4-year university campus in Northern California. The sample was comprised of Latino students enrolled in their second semester or later at the university. A questionnaire, including questions related to the educational experience and family involvement, was sent out to 52 Latino students who were members of a Latino Greek organization on the campus. From that population, six students then participated in a one-on-one interview pertaining to their personal educational experience. Findings from the study showed that even though many Latino parents are not educated on the college process, their support is crucial in the success of their students. Most students agreed that family was one of the main reasons they were successful in attaining a higher education. The study showed that persistence is a factor that contributes to the attainment of higher education for Latino students. Despite difficulties in attaining a higher education, persistence is needed for students to have interest in looking for programs or services to help guide them through the process. One recommendation for future studies is to gather information from community colleges and compare family involvement to see if there is a difference in family influence. Finally, future researchers should consider gathering data from parents or guardians to consider their experiences and learn about their needs regarding their student's education.

Navigating the American Education System: Four Latino Success Stories showcases the educational journey of four Latino/a men and women who navigated the American education system successfully. Their success is significant given the multiple and varied challenges that most Latinos/as encounter throughout the K–20 educational continuum. The purpose of this book is not only to show and tell, but to describe ordinary people attaining extraordinary results, who might also stand as good role models for the youngest- and fastest-growing group—Latinos/as—in this country. Researchers of this topic offer compelling statistics, such as the following projection: Out of 100 Latino/a students, a few more than 50 will finish high school; out of this number, five will enroll in college; and out of the original 100, less than one percent will complete a doctorate. While the causes of low academic attainment for Latinos may vary, including limited financial resources and cultural differences, the lack of Latino role models in K–20 education may be a significant contributing factor. The expression, “You can’t be what you don’t see” is especially applicable to Latino/a students who seldom see people like them in positions of prominence and power in educational environments. Across the country, and in particular in states with high numbers of Latino/a students, as the K–20 student body becomes darker, the teaching and decision-making personnel remain light-skinned. Consequently, the absence of role models for an increasing number of students of color may contribute to low levels of aspiration. Many attempts and existing literature regarding the achievement gap of students of color, especially Latinos/as, seem to have had modest or no impact, even when statistical analysis and sound rationales are provided. On the other hand, the stories included in this book offer an alternative that may have an impact and long-lasting effect in the lives of students of color. Story messages tend to stay longer with us and enable us to make sense of complex situations, such as education, culture, and personality traits—persistence, motivation, resilience. Consequently, the stories in this book become vehicles to learn from real-life examples the abstractions of education, home and school culture, and other factors that contribute to academic success. Furthermore, the stories encourage people to write, tell, and share experiences to address ongoing problems; invite change where change is needed; organize thoughts and seek meaningful solutions; invite us to become cognizant about how our emotions direct our thoughts and “move mountains”; enable us to discover undercurrents that hinder organizational communication; direct us to pay attention to the little things that matter and build trust; awaken the good in people through an invitational approach, as opposed to one that it’s mandated; push us to avoid playing it safe and stick out our emotional necks when dealing with people; seek authentic voices to make room for new thinking; make time for people; and allow our voices to define the values we embrace.
