Book Description
The construction of the experimental apparatus for the investigation of the structure of hydromagnetic shock waves has been completed. By means of a technique developed in connection with so-called theta-pinch experiments a cylindrical plasma is produced with an internal magnetic field of variable magnitude. A fast rising external magnetic field is applied, which drives the plasma towards the axis thereby generating cylindrical shock waves. The density and the composition of the initial plasma, the magnitude of the internal magnetic field, the rise time and the maximum amplitude of the compressing field can be varied over a wide range. In particular it is possible to choose the parameters so that the ion mean free path in the shocked plasma is large compared to the ion cyclotron radius. (Author).

Book Description
The hydromagnetic waveguide consists of a cylindrical metal tube filled with a longitudinally magnetized plasma. Among the classes of waves which propagate in this system are the compressional hydromagnetic modes, characterized by a waveguide cutoff at low frequencies and by a resonance at the electron cyclotron frequency. This paper presents the results of observations of the propagation of such waves in a decaying hydrogen plasma at frequencies from 0.8 to 3.4 times the ion cyclotron frequency. The phase shift and attenuation of the waves are interpreted in terms of the ion density and the temperature by applying a theory based on a three-fluid description of the plasma. Spectroscopic measurements of the H sub beta line profile and absolute intensity are used to check the density and temperature inferred from the wave measurements. The results of this study indicate that a simple approximate relationship between the phase factor and density obtained by neglecting dissipation gives densities which agree well with the spectroscopic measurements.

Book Description
An experimental study of the production of magnethydrodynamic waves is reported. This investigation attempts to experimentally answer the questions of energy coupling, modes of propagation, and to explore the possibility of cross modulation between electromagnetic and hydromagnetic waves. A laboratory device, called the Hydromagnetic Wave Tube, was constructed to accomplish this program. The physical construction of this device is outlined and a theoretical analysis of the anticipated ionization characteristics is presented. (Author).
