Book Description
A round turbulent jet was impinged normally upon a circular cylinder and the resulting flow field was studied. The investigation was conducted using a jet which issued from a nozzle with an 11/16 inch diameter. The cylinder had a diameter of 6 5/8 inches. The jet impinged upon the cylinder at nozzle distances of 7, 15, and 30 nozzle diameters, and at velocities of 400 and 500 ft/s. The free jet was studied and found to be 'typical' by comparing it to earlier studies done with round turbulent jets. Surface flow visualization tests were performed to determine the direction of the flow. The wall jet about the cylinder, resulting from the impinging jet, was studied. Measurements of the velocity profiles and turbulence intensities were made. These results were compared to the same information obtained for flat plates and found to be similar for the nozzle distance of 7 diameters. At nozzle distances of 15 and 30 diameters the data was no longer similar. From velocity measurements, the spread rates and decay rates of the wall jet were determined. These results were compared to similar studies done for flat plates. Decay rates were found to be less than that of flat plates and spread rates were greater than that of flat plates, especially about the circumference of the cylinder.

Book Description
The vortex structures in an impinging round jet and the possibility of their control by imposing small jet pulsations are studied. The jet flow is investigated by measurements of the velocity field, of the temperature field, of the instantaneous wall pressure profiles and of the local values of heat transfer coefficient at the wall. The results show that the primary vortices, which roll-up in the jet shear layer, induce an unsteady flow separation at the wall, prohibiting the heat transfer between the wall and the fluid jet. It is found that the vortex roll-up can be controlled by adding small amplitude modulation of the nozzle exit velocity. A certain modulation frequency is able to decrease the vortex circulation and hence to prevent the unsteady separation of the flow. The local heat transfer coefficient can be thus influenced by application of these velocity modulations.

Book Description
This book deals with the numerical and experimental study of oscillations in laminar free and impinging jets. A finite volume algorithm based on non-orthogonal cells has been used to solve the transient, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for two dimensional flow. The code has been employed for the prediction of flow and thermal oscillations in isothermal and non-isothermal jets. For free jets, the effects of parameters such as Reynolds number, inlet temperature and jet orientation on oscillations have been studied. For impinging jet flow, the effects of stand-off distance, Reynolds number and inlet temperature on mean flow as well as jet oscillations have been studied.

Book Description
The present study investigates the interaction between two jets: a primary round jet and secondary jets formed by a manipulated co-annular jet. Secondary jets were formed by a combination of a co-annular jet issuing from a nozzle with convex surfaces and fluid injection into the co-annular jet perpendicular to the primary jet axis. Experiments reported here were carried out using a two-component Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry system to determine the effects of the secondary jet on the primary jet. Mean velocity and Reynolds stress measurements were made along and across the primary jet centerline with and without the presence of the secondary jet. It was observed that fluid injection into the spacing between the inner jet pipe and the outer jet surface highly affects the characteristics of the mixing region. Fluid injection perpendicular to the co-annular jet transforms the co-annular jet into two separate jets positioned at 180 degrees apart from each other. As compared to the primary jet only case, the interaction of the secondary jets with the primary jet results in a planar primary jet showing faster centerline velocity reduction. The spreading of the jet was also seen to be twice the values observed with the primary jet alone at each x/d location. The Reynolds number for the primary jet was about 16000.

Book Description
The objective of this study is to investigate experimentally the rectangular jet flow that impinges to a flat plate normally and obliquely. The aspect ratio (nozzle exit height / nozzle exit width) of the rectangular nozzle is 2.First, to investigate the characteristics of the coming flow to the impingement surface, the free jet conditions are examined by using three different Reynolds numbers based on the nozzle exit width as 3.47x 10 4, 6.94x 10 4 and 1.04x 10 5. Then, the effect of the ratio of the nozzle-to-plate distance to nozzle exit width, H/w, on the jet impingement flow is studied for the Reynolds number of 1.05x10 5. H/w ratio is taken as 2.0, 3.08, 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0. To examine the effect of the 8, which is the angle between the jet centerline axis and the surface normal axis, on the jet impingement characteristics, q is taken as 0 o, 5 o, l0o, 15 o and 20 o.The mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles are measured by using hot-wire anemometer. The outputs of the hot-wire system are taken and drown by a personal computer with a hot-wire software and data acquisition card. Impingement surface pressures, according to the pressure at settling chamber are measured by using a micro manometer which is connected to a personal computer with a data acquisition card. In this study, the surface oil-film technique is used to visualize the impingement surface flow pattern and smoke method is used to visualize the flow pattern of the free jet and jet impingement to a flat surface. This study consists of five main sections (Chapter 1-5) and 6 appendix (Appendix A-F).Chapter 1 is introduction. The importance of the subject, the purpose of the study and the experimental techniques that were used are mentioned..In Chapter 2., information about free jet flow and jet impingement according to literature review is given.Chapter 3., explains the instrumentation and experimental techniques. In Chapter 4. results and discussion are given. Concluding remarks are made in Chapter 5.
