Book Description
This work focuses on the experimental investigation of the ternary Mg-Al-Ca system using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and metallographic techniques. Twenty one samples were chosen in the critical regions with the guidance of the phase diagrams developed by thermodynamic modeling. The DSC has permitted real time measurement of the temperature and enthalpy of the phase transformations. The experimental results were compared with thermodynamic calculations using the phase assemblage diagrams and vertical sections. The thermodynamic calculations are consistent with the experimental results in some samples, especially in the solidus temperature, whereas discrepancy was observed in several cases especially in the liqudus phase transformation temperature. This suggests that Mg-Al-Ca system should be reoptimised considering the new experimental findings. Nevertheless, the phases that were identified with the XRD and metallographic techniques show agreement with thermodynamic modeling. One of the invariant transformations predicted by thermodynamic modeling was verified experimentally and found to occur at 512°C and the composition is close to 10.8 at.% Ca 79.5 at.% Mg and 9.7 at.% Al. In this study, a new phase region was found close to the Mg-Al side and a new ternary solid solution (Mg 2 Ca) was confirmed.

Thermodynamic Modeling and Experimental Investigation of the Mg-Al-Ca-Sr System
Author: Mohammad Aljarrah

Book Description
In this work, a self-consistent thermodynamic database for the Mg-Al-Ca-Sr system using the modified quasichemical model has been constructed. The thermodynamic description of the quaternary system was established by combining the thermodynamic descriptions of the constituent binary and ternary sub-systems. The Mg-Al-Ca and Mg-Al-Sr systems were investigated by combining thermodynamic modeling and experimental investigation. The experimental investigation has been performed using DSC, XRD, SEM and EPMA. Also, isothermal sections at 300°C and 400°C were constructed for the Mg-Al-Ca and Mg-Al-Sr systems. In the Mg-Al-Sr system, six ternary solubilities of the binary compounds extended into the ternary system have been found and denoted as (Mg 17 Sr 2), (Mg 23 Sr 6), (Mg 38 Sr 9), (Mg 2 Sr), (Al 4 Sr) and (Al 2 Sr). The reported ternary compound in the literature (Mg 58 Al 38 Sr 4) has been observed in this work. In the Mg-Al-Ca system, three binary compounds were found to dissolve the third component in the ternary system and were denoted as (Al 2 Ca), (Al 3 Ca 8), and (Mg 2 Ca). The ternary compound (C36) reported in the literature has been confirmed. A comparison between the calculated liquidus projection of the Mg-Ca-Sr system using the modified quasichemical model and random solution model has been presented. It was found that while the random solution model agrees well with the experimental phase diagram, the modified quasichemical model gives better agreement with the experimental thermodynamic data and the experimental phase diagram. Liquidus projection of the Al-Ca-Sr system was calculated using the modified quasichemical model and combined with the other three ternaries in one database for the Mg-Al-Ca-Sr system.

Thermodynamic Optimization of the Ca-RE and Mg-Ca-Nd Systems Coupled with Experimental Investigation

Book Description
"The main purpose of the present study is to obtain accurate thermodynamic database to describe the phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties of the entire Mg-Ca-Nd system, which can be utilized for Mg alloy design containing Ca and RE. The Ca-RE (RE = Nd, Y, Ce) binary systems were optimized based on assessed phase diagram data. All available data in the literature were critically evaluated and used to optimize the model parameters to reproduce all available phase diagram data. Liquid solution was described using the Modified Quasichemical Model (MQM), and the solid solutions were described with the Compound Energy Formalism (CEF). It should be noted that all Ca-RE systems show liquid miscibility gap. In order to facilitate the thermodynamic optimization of the Mg-Ca-Nd ternary system, key phase diagram experiments were performed to supplement the few existing phase diagram experimental data. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was successfully conducted up to 750oC on samples of 5 different compositions in the Mg-rich side and up to about 30 mole percent Nd and 50 mole percent Ca. To prevent the volatilization and oxidation of samples, sealed Fe capsule was employed. Based on the new phase diagram data and all available information in literature, thermodynamic optimization of the ternary Mg-Ca-Nd system was carried out. In particular, the solubility of Ca in Mg41Nd5 and Nd in Mg2Ca were well reproduced by CEF. In general, the available phase diagram data were well reproduced and the phase diagram of the entire Mg-Ca-Nd system was predicted"--
