Book Description
Why is an object, an artwork, or a person deemed ?exotic?? How does one?s gaze get directed onto things or people seemingly belonging to other regions or cultures? These questions are examined here in relation to a specific context: the Enlightenment era from the Swiss perspective. This publication brings together research by academics and museum specialists for the first time in order to rethink this time period and geography. It contains essays and shorter texts centered on pictures, objects, books, and natural specimens from Swiss museum collections. ?Exotic? in this context refers to things that come from elsewhere and that can be used and ?improved? for the benefit of European powers. The term invites us to reconsider both the long eighteenth century and the international history of Switzerland.00Exhibition: Palais de Rumine, Lausanne, Switzerland (24.09.2020 - 28.02.2021).

Book Description
Anything Goes is an unusual and a hilarious collection of short stories by the author Martin Dec Haynes F.R.C.S. who is also a poet, a surgeon, golfer, philatelist and humorist. Because of the author’s vast working experience lots of his stories have a medical theme, but you can rest assured that, coming from Haynes, they are not run-of-the-mill, nay rather they are extremely esoteric and virtually beyond belief. Near the end of the book the writing style takes a detour and a few yarns are narrated as if by idiot types who misspell words, or some of the words are written as they are pronounced, adding greatly to the farcical effect. The last story is about a young man who leaves his wife behind in The Islands, and goes to London to study medicine successfully; then he divorces his island-wife from a distance and takes a spanking new English wife. He is now about to return to his native island but his grandfather is waiting at the airport with a shotgun to blow out his brains. Fortunately, other family members are able to avert the disaster. All in all the collection is a riproaring read.

Book Description
Switzerland is known for its multilingualism, yet not all languages are represented equally in society. The situation is exacerbated by the influx of heritage languages and English through migration and globalization processes which challenge the traditional education system. This study is the first to investigate how schools in Grisons, Fribourg, and Zurich negotiate neoliberal forces leading to a growing necessity of English, a romanticized view on national languages, and the social justice perspective of institutionalizing heritage languages. It uncovers power and legitimacy issues and showcases students' and teachers' complex identities to advocate equitable multilingual education.
