Research informs the development of a project which, rather than defusing these characteristics, attempts to integrate them within the scene of a political struggle. The proposed project dramatizes, through its architecture, a Palestinian disobedience to the colonial legislation imposed on its legal territory. This edited volume examines the political, social, and cultural insecurities that the United States is faced with in the aftermath of its post-9/11 foreign policy and military ventures. The contributors critically detail the new strategies and ideologies of control, governance, and hegemony America has devised as a response to these new security threats. The essays explore three primary areas. First, they interrogate the responses to 9/11 that resulted in an attempt at geopolitical mastery by the United States. Second, they examine how the US response to 9/11 led to attempts to secure and control populations inside and outside the United States, resulting in situations that quickly started to escape its control, such as Abu Ghraib and Katrina. Lastly, the chapters investigate links between contemporary regimes of state control and recently recognized threats, arguing that the conduct of everyday life is increasingly conditioned by state-mobilized discourses of security. Of the German Protestant missionaries in Tanzania, Lutheran or Moravian, none was as famous as Bruno Gutmann, who worked among the Chagga from 1902 – 1938, and only World War prevented him and his wife to live there for the rest of their lives (they had already prepared their burial place among the Chagga). When I did my research there in the early 1970s, I was told that he spoke the Chagga language better than any Chagga, and when reading the three big volumes about the boys’ initiation teaching (parallel in Chagga and German), I believed it. The Chagga honoured him as their Father (Wasahuye O Wachagga) in 1963, and 50 years later the memory is still strong. In Germany his missiological ideas with the value attached to the primal ties of family, neighbourhood and age- group were controversial. In 2016 the Lutheran Leipzig Mission honoured the 50 th anniversary of his death with an academic colloquium, the texts generated by it make up this volume.

Ceremony and Ritual in Parliament breaks new ground in the study of legislatures. It combines mainstream historical and social science approaches with cultural theory to consider how parliamentary ritual is constructed through ceremony, space and socialisation. The focus is on the marginalised groups especially women and members of ethnic minorities who seek inclusion as representatives in democratic legislatures. This book assesses aspects of the role that ceremony and ritual in legislatures play, especially but not exclusively, in their gendered and racialised dimensions. Within this broad frame, it considers the impact of space, identity, ritual and/or ceremony on the institutional form of parliament, how power is shaped within it, how the behaviour of members is facilitated, constrained and shaped, how power and rituals interact to and how they impinge upon the relationships between representative institutions and citizens. Contributions are theoretical and empirical, comparative or single-country studies of national or sub-national legislatures. They have interdisciplinary, historical, or postcolonial perspectives that contribute to this emerging field in the study of parliaments. This book was previously published as a special issue of the Journal of Legislative Studies.
