Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training for Rural Schools The present trend of education is to train the hand as well as the mind. There is no question but that the study of the three RS is as necessary and vital today as ever. Close observers, however, have found that other studies can be added that will make school work more interesting and practical without detracting from the essentials. Industrial studies are now firmly established in all progressive high schools and many grade schools, and the movement is spreading to the rural schools as rapidly as conditions permit. Book Description
Excerpt from Suggestions and Exercises for Manual Training There is another, an economic question, involved in this work It has been demonstrated beyond any possibility of doubt that older pupils, boys especially, are not so anxious to drop out of those schools where manual training is taught. They see in it something that may touch their lives in the future. The relation of algebra, geometry, Latin, and kindred subjects to the necessities of every day life cannot be so readily seen and conse quently when they reach that stage of young manhood or young woman hood from which they begin to look over into real life they get restless, lose interest, and usually leave school. But if such young men and young women can be kept in school by manual training they will learn not only manual training and receive the benefits involved therein but in connection with the subject they would also be taught something of other higher branches and thus their higher powers of thought, which are ordinarily untouched owing to their youth and the subjects taught in the lower grades of school work, would be developed. This alone is a powerful argument in favor of the introduction of some phase of manual training in all schools. Manual training is also an element of safety in our social life. The more of it a young person does in a systematic manner the more he touches real life; the young man, industrial life and the young woman, domestic life. This touch creates an understanding of and sympathy with labor thus bridging a deep and widening chasm in this country. Book Description
Excerpt from A Graduated Course of Simple Manual Training Exercises, Vol. 1: For Educating the Hand and Eye IT is now very generally admitted that the Kindergarten exercises, as carried out in many of the best infant schools, provide an excellent means of education through the medium of the operations performed by the children themselves with the objects comprising the various gifts. And it has been a frequent source of regret that arrangements were not made for continuing such work, in a more advanced form, with the children after they had left the infant school. The great attention which has recently been given to the general subject of technical education has considerably strengthened this feeling, and has led to attempts being made to supply this deficiency in the ordinary school course. The present scheme of exercises, drawn up at the request of the Liverpool School Board, and successfully introduced into nearly all their schools, is intended to provide a graduated four years' course of practical work for children of from seven to eleven years of age (standards I. It consists of four series of exercises, each series containing thirty exercises, and forming the subject of a year's work. The present volume contains the first and second series the second part, contain ing the other two series, is in an advanced stage of preparation. The author is indebted to several teachers in the Board's Schools, and to the Board's inspectors, for various criticisms suggested in the course of the actual working out of the exercises in the schools. Book Description
Excerpt from The Manual Training School, Comprising a Full Statement of Its Aims, Methods, and Results: With Figured Drawings of Shop Exercises in Woods and Metals This book really consists of four Parts; namely: - I. The Historical Introduction and Chap. XIV. II. The exposition of the methods and scope of the school, with full details as regards the manual elements, in Chaps. II., III., IV., and XV. III. The results of manual training, as shown by the records and testimony of graduates and others, in Chaps. V. and VI. IV. Discussions of the educational, social, and economic bearings of manual training from various standpoints and at various times, in Chaps. VII. to XIII. It is possible that this classification may be of value to those who come for suggestions in specific directions. To others the arrangement may appear illogical, and the repetitions unnecessary. In defence of the arrangement I must say that I have had in mind two things: first and foremost, the probable state of mind of the reader who comes to this book to learn of a matter of which he has heard much, but knows little. He wants facts, arguments, and speculations, according to the stage of his progress in finding out what manual training really is, and what it aims at. And secondly, the desirability of showing clearly the growth and progress of ideas in the development of the school. As to the occasional repetitions of statements and arguments, I will say that no one is likely to read the book through consecutively. Those who do me the honor to read it at all will read by topics and separate chapters, and being thus read I doubt if the repetitions will be found objectionable. Of necessity, much common material appears in every address. The earlier addresses were quite general in their treatment, and I have preferred to let them stand fairly complete. I trust no apology will be necessary for inserting addresses which, in one form or another, have already appeared in print. And it does not appear necessary to. State them again here. Book Description
Excerpt from Exercises and Drills: Being a Teacher's Manual of Physical Training Containing a Progressive Series of Exercises for Use in Schools Without the Aid of Apparatus It is the object of the writer to place in the hands of school teachers a Manual of Physical Training which can be easily understood, and which will prove of assistance in conducting this important branch of school work. The method of arrangement will indicate to the teacher such of the important movements as are suitable for the class room, and will show how they can be properly arranged into short drills. Like every other branch of school work, Physical Training has its difficulties, and the lessons or drills may sometimes lag, but with a little effort on the part of the teacher interest can be awakened, and the real pleasure and benefit derived, when teacher and pupils become familiar with the drill, will more than repay for the effort it costs to make the daily drill a bright Spot in the day's routine. Various systems of Physical Training have been advocated during recent years. They all have their merits and can be commended each for its own peculiar excellencies. But for use in schools they all need modification and adaptation to the conditions and limitations of the school room. The system of exercises and drills presented in this Manual attempts to make a judicious selection of the best features of the different systems. It cannot, therefore, be classed with the Swedish system, with the German system, or with any other of the current systems. If it is to have a special name, it would, perhaps, best be called Eclectic. It is the practice of some systems to omit certain exercises on the ground that they tend to confirm the pupil in his incor rect postures. The method adopted by this Manual, however, is to provide counteracting exercises, without omitting any exercises necessary for symmetrical development. And, in order to emphasize the correct posture, it is the uniform prac tice of this system to follow the contracting and stooping movements by the straightening, extending and expanding movements.
