Strategic Thinking
Author: Irene M. Duhaime
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136663320
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 340
Book Description
There are many strategy books available in the marketplace for today’s student or business professional; most of them view strategy from the 10,000 foot level, while Strategic Thinking looks at this important business topic through a different lens. Written from the perspective of a manager, this book builds on theories of managerial and organizational cognition that have had a powerful influence on many business fields over the last two decades. As other books on business policy and strategy cover a broad range of topics, models, frameworks, and theories, the unique feature of this book is that it covers all this, but also focuses on how managers of business firms understand their business environments, assess and marshal their firms’ resources, and strive for advantage in the competitive marketplace. It examines the economic, structural, and managerial explanations for firm performance. Offering professors and business people who are intrigued by the ideas introduced in Peter Senge’s books ways to apply those ideas and principles in the classroom and in the companies in which they work, the book puts managers front and center.

The Supply-side Revolution with Chinese Characteristics
Author: Fang Fuqian
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 100083879X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 230
Book Description
Focusing on the supply-side structural reform in China, this book investigates the impetus, implementation strategy, initial results and theoretical underpinnings of the revolution, assessing its significance in perfecting China’s socialist market economic system. The supply-side structural reform launched in China in 2015 aims to thoroughly resolve the cyclical excess capacity and the habitual imbalance of economic structure; and form a long-term mechanism for economic stability, different from the supply-side policies under the Reagan Administration in the 1980s. Based on the analysis framework of aggregate demand and supply, combined with institutional and structural analysis, the title elucidates the reason, theory, measures and results that ground the reform. It explicates the three-step strategy to ensure the successful outcome, countermeasures against current supply-side problems, upgrading the economic structure, and most importantly the institutional reform and innovation. The author emphasizes the importance of reforming both market and government and advances a “double-effect” model combining the effective market and government. This title will appeal to scholars, students and policymakers interested in economics, macroeconomic control, and the Chinese economy and economic system reform.

The Investment Climate and the Firm
Author: Mary Hallward-Driemeier
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN:
Category : Business enterprises
Languages : en
Pages : 56
Book Description
The importance of a country's "investment climate" for economic growth has recently received much attention. Hallward-Driemeier, Wallsten, and Xu address the general lack of appropriate data for measuring the investment climate and its effects. The authors use a new survey of 1,500 Chinese enterprises in five cities to more precisely define and measure components of the investment climate, highlight the importance of firm-level data for rigorous analysis of the investment climate, and investigate empirically the effects of this comprehensive set of measures on firm performance in China. Overall, their firm-level analysis reveals that the main determinants of firm performance in China are international integration, entry and exit, labor market issues, technology use, and access to external finance. This paper--a product of Investment Climate, Development Research Group--is part of a larger effort in the group to understand the investment climate using firm-level datasets.

A Theory of the Firm
Author: Michael C. Jensen
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674012295
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 342
Book Description
This collection examines the forces, both external and internal, that lead corporations to behave efficiently and to create wealth. Corporations vest control rights in shareholders, the author argues, because they are the constituency that bear business risk and therefore have the appropriate incentives to maximize corporate value. Assigning control to any other group would be tantamount to allowing that group to play poker with someone else's money, and would create inefficiencies. The implicit denial of this proposition is the fallacy of the so-called stakeholder theory of the corporation, which argues that corporations should be run in the interests of all stakeholders. This theory offers no account of how conflicts between different stakeholders are to be resolved, and gives managers no principle on which to base decisions, except to follow their own preferences. In practice, shareholders delegate their control rights to a board of directors, who hire, fire, and set the compensation of the chief officers of the firm. However, because agents have different incentives than the principals they represent, they can destroy corporate value unless closely monitored. This happened in the 1960s and led to hostile takeovers in the market for corporate control in the 1970s and 1980s. The author argues that the takeover movement generated increases in corporate efficiency that exceeded $1.5 trillion and helped to lay the foundation for the great economic boom of the 1990s.

Adam Smith in Beijing
Author: Giovanni Arrighi
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1844672980
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 433
Book Description
In the late eighteenth century, the political economist Adam Smith predicted an eventual equalization of power between the West and the territories it had conquered. In this magisterial new work, Giovanni Arrighi shows how China’s extraordinary rise invites us to reassess radically the conventional reading of The Wealth of Nations. He examines how recent US attempts to create the first truly global empire were conceived to counter China’s spectacular economic success Now America’s disastrous failure in Iraq has made the People’s Republic of China the true winner in the US War on Terror. China may soon become again the kind of noncapitalist market economy that Smith described, an event that will reconfigure world trade and the global balance of power.
