This report provides the results of a research study requested by New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and conducted by University of New Mexico. The research team examined developing and characterizing self-consolidating concrete (SCC) produced using local New Mexico materials. It also includes a brief review on the state of the art of SCC. Five SCC mixes were produced using local New Mexico aggregate from two sources in New Mexico. SCC mixes are compared to normal vibrated concrete (NVC) mixes typically used in NMDOT highway projects and they were produced using the same local aggregate. Mix designs of the SCC and NVC mixes are described in detail. The plastic properties of fresh concrete are reported and discussed. Complete details on all strength and durability characteristics of SCC examined up to one year of age are discussed. The strength characteristics include compressive and flexural strength and static and dynamic modulus of elasticity. Creep and shrinkage of SCC are also studied as well as durability properties including chloride ion resistance, freeze-thaw durability, and the potential for alkali-silica reaction (ASR). The report concludes with a suggested implementation plan for using SCC in highway projects in New Mexico.

In this study cracking caused by external loads in reinforced SCC andFRSCC slabs is examined experimentally and analytically. The mechanismsassociated with the flexural cracking due to the combined effects ofconstant sustained service loads and shrinkage are observed. One of theprimary objectives of this study is to develop analytical models thataccurately predict the hardened mechanical properties of SCC and FRSCC.Subsequently, these models have been successfully applied to simulatetime-dependent cracking of SCC and FRSCC one-way slabs.

The RILEM series of symposia started in 1999 in Stockholm, followed by Tokyo in 2001, Reykjavik in 2003, Chicago in 2005, and Ghent in 2007 with a steadily increasing number of papers, participants, and interest from across the globe. Due to the growing success of SCC, regional conferences have been organized, such as the North-American Conference on the Design and Use of SCC held in Chicago in 2002, 2005, and 2008; the International Symposium on Design, Performance and Use of SCC held nd in Changsa, China in 2005 and in Beijing, China in 2009; as well as the 2 International Conference on Advances in Concrete Technology in the Middle East: SCC held in Abu Dhabi in 2009. It can be concluded that these regional Conferences and Symposia were highly successful and reached a far more international audience than anticipated. Nearly 100 papers were submitted for these proceedings from which the International Scientific Committee selected 37 contributions covering a wide range of timely and original subjects from around the world. As a fundamental building material in modern times, concrete has been subject to continual development. It has evolved from a simple mixture of basic elements (ie: hydraulic cement, water, and aggregates) to become a modern high-performance material -- a material designed to respond to the environment and in some versions to preserve it. This book reflects the recent research developments in regards to concrete technology. As such, it focuses on the innovative high-performance concrete known as self-consolidating concrete (SCC). This kind of concrete has outstanding properties such that it can flow and become compact by its own weight without bleeding and with minimal reliance on energy. Originating in Japan in 1983 in response to a labor supply shortage in the construction industry, SCC requires less work to compact in the production process than conventional concrete does. That is, unlike conventional concrete, SCC can flow by its own weight and requires very little vibration to compact. This book is for readers who want to become well-versed in the most important current research in the field of novel SCC. The book will be useful for students, researchers, concrete scientists and technologists, and practicing engineers. This book consists of eight chapters. Each chapter is comprised of an introduction, a discussion of the concept of the design and the concretes development, and the properties and testing of the concrete in fresh and hardened stages of SCC. Clearly, the properties of concrete, especially SCC, have shown remarkable improvement in recent years, and the movement toward more environmentally sound production practices is also encouraging. The opportunity to offer a detailed account of SCC in this light constitutes the authors principal reason for writing this book, which is itself the result of significant research. Despite his best efforts, though, it may be that the authors account includes some errors, for which he takes full responsibility. Nevertheless, it has been the authors great pleasure to write this book, which he hopes will prove useful to readers both in the context of research and in the context of practical applications of SCC.
