Book Description
This new book offers a timely and lively appraisal of the concept of communicative repertoires, resources we use to express who we are when in dialogue with others. Each chapter describes and illustrates the communicative resources humans deploy daily, but rarely think about – not only the multiple languages we use, but how we dress or gesture, how we greet each other or tell stories, the nicknames we coin, and the mass media references we make – and how these resources combine in infinitely varied performances of identity. Rymes also discusses how our repertoires shift and grow over the course of a lifetime, as well how a repertoire perspective can lead to a rethinking of cultural diversity and human interaction, from categorizing people’s differences to understanding how our repertoires can expand and overlap with other, thereby helping us to find common ground and communicate in increasingly multicultural schools, workplaces, markets, and social spheres. Rymes affirms the importance of the communicative repertoires concept with highly engaging discussions and contemporary examples from mass media, popular culture, and everyday life. The result is a fresh and exciting work that will resonate with students and scholars in sociolinguistics, intercultural communication, applied linguistics, and education.

Book Description
There is an alarming trend to disassociate from family, friends, and neighbors with differing and diverse worldviews from one's own. In the absence of dialogue, trust weakens, relationships dissolve, everything humans cherish becomes susceptible to collapse, and societies become more likely to resort to destructive tactics. Everyday Encounters introduces the importance of dialogue to humanize others in healthy ways. Dialogue is a crucial tool in navigating encounters across difference, promoting attentive listening and sensitivity for constructive human engagement in various settings like family, leadership, and the workplace. Hans Gustafson presents dialogue as a versatile and vital tool for communication across diverse contexts, from personal interactions to geopolitical negotiations. The book condenses practical insights about the theory and practice of dialogue and human engagement across difference into five short chapters. Gustafson's language employs jargon-free clarity with a goal of accessibility. Dialogue is a fundamental means of communication at the core of human interaction, crucial for healthy relationships, effective leadership, and fostering honesty and empathy--two foundational virtues for human flourishing.

Book Description
Contingent Encounters offers a sustained comparative study of improvisation as it appears between music and everyday life. Drawing on work in musicology, cultural studies, and critical improvisation studies, as well as his own performing experience, Dan DiPiero argues that comparing improvisation across domains calls into question how improvisation is typically recognized. By comparing the music of Eric Dolphy, Norwegian free improvisers, Mr. K, and the Ingrid Laubrock/Kris Davis duo with improvised activities in everyday life (such as walking, baking, working, and listening), DiPiero concludes that improvisation appears as a function of any encounter between subjects, objects, and environments. Bringing contingency into conversation with the utopian strain of critical improvisation studies, DiPiero shows how particular social investments cause improvisation to be associated with relative freedom, risk-taking, and unpredictability in both scholarship and public discourse. Taking seriously the claim that improvisation is the same thing as living, Contingent Encounters overturns long-standing assumptions about the aesthetic and political implications of this notoriously slippery term.

Jonathan Bach examines the afterlife of East Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall, as things and places from the socialist past continue to circulate and shape the politics of memory. What Remains traces the effects of these artifacts, arguing for a rethinking of the role of the everyday as a site of reckoning with difficult pasts.

Book Description
Against the background of China's rapidly growing, and sometimes highly controversial, activities in Africa, this book is among the first of its kind to systematically document Sino-African interactions at the everyday level. Based on sixteen months of ethnographic fieldwork at two contrasting sites in Lusaka, Zambia—a Chinese state-sponsored educational farm and a private Chinese family farm—Di Wu focuses on daily interactions among Chinese migrants and their Zambian hosts. Daily communicative events, e.g. banquets, market negotiations, work-place disputes, and various social encounters across a range of settings are used to trace the essential role that emotion/affect plays in forming and reproducing social relations and group identities among Chinese migrants. Wu suggests that affective encounters in everyday situations—as well as failed attempts to generate affect—should not be overlooked in order to fully appreciate Sino-African interactions. Deeply researched and with rich ethnographic detail, this book will be relevant to scholars of anthropology, international development, and others interested in Sino-African relations.

Book Description
This inspiring daily devotional will challenge you to grow in your relationship with the Lord while allowing Him to transform you into the Christlike person He calls you to be. Enhance your personal moments with God each day by being reminded of vital biblical truths which can be found imbedded in our everyday experiences. Hear God speaking through interactions with grandchildren, nature, the day’s headlines, holiday gatherings, and all the other common occurrences in life. Let these readings point you to further study in God’s Word, lead you to seeking God in prayer, and guide you into greater service for His kingdom. Here’s an excerpt from one of those daily messages: “Last weekend when I first saw a news report about a missing husband and wife, I thought it was an unfortunate and potentially tragic situation. But when I realized I actually knew the couple – that we had been fellow church members with this nice lady many years ago - the story really hit home. So I kept checking the news throughout the day to receive updates on the search for these missing persons. Isn’t that the way it often goes? We may hear about certain people, their situations and predicaments. We may respond with some degree of slight interest to genuine concern. But when it involves somebody we know, our own family, or ourselves, it really gets our attention and has a bigger impact on us. It reminds me of the time the prophet Nathan told King David about a man who had a great number of flocks and herds...Once David realized this story was about him, it deeply affected him, leading to heartfelt confession and repentance. Maybe there are some stories, facts, and truths in the Bible which we need to take more personally than we do. The general statements may affect us to some degree, but not as much as they should. In many cases we need to realize it’s talking about me and you. When the Bible declares that God so loved the world that He sent His Son, we should take it personally. God loves you. God cared enough about you to take such action. You are the one... When God’s Word calls believers to love others and be holy, He’s talking to you. When He commissions His followers to be His witnesses, to be lights in a dark world, and to share the gospel, He is sending you. You are the one. If God’s Word isn’t moving us and affecting us very deeply, maybe it’s because we’re looking at it as more of a textbook to be studied rather than as a personal letter to be received. Read the Bible, see yourself in its truths, and seek to hear what God wants to say to you.”

Book Description
“A mind-expanding and heart-opening book” (Daniel Goleman, author of Social Intelligence) that reveals the value of everyday interactions with people in our communities – and what we lose without them. Our barista, our mechanic, our coworker—they populate our days, but we often take them for granted. Yet these are the people who bring novelty and information into our lives, allow us to exercise different parts of ourselves, and open us up to new opportunities. In their unprecedented examination of people on the periphery, psychologist Karen Fingerman, who coined the term “consequential strangers,” collaborates with journalist Melinda Blau to expand on and make her own groundbreaking research come alive. Drawing as well from Blau’s more than two hundred interviews with specialists in psychology, sociology, marketing, and communication, the book presents compelling stories of individuals and institutions, past and present. A rich portrait of our social landscape—on and off the Internet—it presents the science of casual connection and chronicles the surprising impact that consequential strangers have on business, creativity, the work environment, our physical and mental health, and the strength of our communities.
