Book Description
Evapotranspiration and its components (evaporation and transpiration) as a process is one of the basic terms of Earth's water balance; its importance is accented by the fact that transpiration is the vital element of the biomass production process. The second important property of evapotranspiration is its extreme consumption of solar energy, thus controlling the temperature of the atmosphere and creating favourable conditions for life. Evapotranspiration as an energy consuming process is also the connection between the energy and mass cycles of the Earth. Evapotranspiration is a process performing in the Soil–Plant –Atmosphere System (SPAS); therefore this book is presenting and quantifying it as a catenary process, describing transport of water in the soil, including root extraction patterns and methods of its evaluation. Transport of water through the plant and from the canopy to the atmosphere is also described and quantified. A variety of evapotranspiration (and its components evaporation and transpiration) calculation methods are described, starting from empirical methods up to the most sophisticated ones based on the solution of the transport equations of water and energy in the SPAS. The most important (and widely used) calculation method - modified Penman–Monteith method is described in details, ready to be used with data in the book only. Water balance method of evapotranspiration estimation as well as sap flow method description can be found in the book as well. The book can be used by hydrologists, biologists, meteorologists and other specialists as well as by ecology students. Key themes: soil hydrology – evapotranspiration – hydropedology– plant physiology – water movement in soils – evaporation – transpiration Dr. Viliam Novák is a water resources scientist at the Institute of Hydrology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava (Slovakia).

Book Description
Estimating evapotranspiration (ET) has been one of the most critical research areas in agriculture because of water scarcity, the growing population, and climate change. The accurate estimation and mapping of ET are necessary for crop water management. Traditionally, researchers use water balance, soil moisture, weighing lysimeters, or an energy balance approach, such as Bowen ratio or eddy covariance towers to estimate ET. However, these ET methods are point-specific or area-weighted measurements and cannot be extended to a large scale. On the other hand, while remote sensing is able to provide spatially distributed measurements, the spatial resolution of multispectral satellite images is often not enough for crops with clumped canopy structures, such as trees and vines. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can mitigate these spatial and temporal limitations. Lightweight cameras and sensors can be mounted on the UAVs and take high-resolution images. Unlike satellite imagery, the spatial resolution of the UAV images can be at the centimeter-level. UAVs can also fly on-demand, which provides high temporal imagery. This book examines the different UAV-based approaches of ET estimation. Models and algorithms, such as mapping evapotranspiration at high resolution with internalized calibration (METRIC), the two-source energy balance (TSEB) model, and machine learning (ML) are discussed. It also covers the challenges and opportunities for UAVs in ET estimation, with the final chapters devoted to new ET estimation methods and their potential applications for future research.

Book Description
Agriculture in Uzbekistan critically depends on water resources availability, therefore crop production, especially of cotton and winter wheat, is restricted mainly to irrigated areas. As a result of water shortage under climate change, land degradation issues in the region worsened and water use efficiency has considerably decreased over the decades. Hence, it is essential to investigate water balance parameters in irrigated lands. Environmental isotopes have been widely applied in hydrological investigations, particularly estimation of evapotranspiration rate, one of the main components of the water balance in irrigated lands. This study aims to estimate evapotranspiration rates in cotton fields by applying water stable isotopes (2H and 18O). The study is based on the field experiments conducted during the vegetation periods 2010 and 2011 in the Fergana Region of Uzbekistan. Soil for isotope analysis were sampled in a sandy field, sandy loam #1 field (rich with gypsum) and sandy loam #2 field (without gypsum). The soil water from the samples was extracted by the cryogenic extraction method. δ2H and δ18O ratios of extracted water were determined using the laser spectroscopy method. Evapotranspiration rates were estimated with the isotope mass balance model. Besides evapotranspiration estimation, this study examines the variability and characteristics of stable isotope signatures of different water sources in the study region and analyzes water extraction processes from different soil types and temporal changes of isotope signatures through the depth in irrigated cotton fields.

Book Description
This edition of Evapotranspiration - Remote Sensing and Modeling contains 23 chapters related to the modeling and simulation of evapotranspiration (ET) and remote sensing-based energy balance determination of ET. These areas are at the forefront of technologies that quantify the highly spatial ET from the Earth's surface. The topics describe mechanics of ET simulation from partially vegetated surfaces and stomatal conductance behavior of natural and agricultural ecosystems. Estimation methods that use weather based methods, soil water balance, the Complementary Relationship, the Hargreaves and other temperature-radiation based methods, and Fuzzy-Probabilistic calculations are described. A critical review describes methods used in hydrological models. Applications describe ET patterns in alpine catchments, under water shortage, for irrigated systems, under climate change, and for grasslands and pastures. Remote sensing based approaches include Landsat and MODIS satellite-based energy balance, and the common process models SEBAL, METRIC and S-SEBS. Recommended guidelines for applying operational satellite-based energy balance models and for overcoming common challenges are made.

Book Description
Fundamentals of Evapotranspiration aims to determine simple methods to evaluate evapotranspiration and to examine the evolution of these methods over time. It compares and contrasts best practices and discusses the opportunities for harmonization among various methods. Further, the book discusses optimal calibration of these methods in a local context, depending on particular climates and scenarios. The book serves as a practical resource for students and professionals working in agriculture, irrigation and water engineering and will aid in evaluating the methods and equations for the most efficient means of evapotranspiration. The authors examine the methods for evaluating evapotranspiration considering the evaporation from water surfaces, soil and vegetation. The authors address issues according to various regions, climates and soil types, and apply the optimal solution for each situation.

Book Description
Watershed modeling is at the heart of modern hydrology, supplying rich information that is vital to addressing resource planning, environmental, and social problems. Even in light of this important role, many books relegate the subject to a single chapter while books devoted to modeling focus only on a specific area of application. Recognizing the
