Due to unpredictable network topology changes, routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) is an important and challenging research area. The routing protocol should detect and maintain a good route(s) between source and destination nodes in these dynamic networks. Many routing protocols have been proposed for mobile ad hoc networks, and none can be considered as the best under all conditions. This thesis presents the design and implementation of a new proactive multipath MANET routing protocol. The protocol, named Multipath Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (MDSDV), is based on the well known single path Destination Sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV). We show that the protocol finds node-disjoint paths, i.e., paths which do not have any nodes in common, except for the source and the destination. The thesis presents a systematic evaluation of MDSDV in comparison with three well known protocols: one proactive (DSDV), and two reactive (AODV) and (DSR). MDSDV behaves very well in terms of its packet delivery fraction and data dropped in both static and dynamic networks. It delivers nearly 100% of data in dense networks (networks with more than 20 nodes). The speed of the nodes and the number of sources have a low impact on its performance.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) consist of a collection of wireless mobile nodes that move freely and self-configure without a preexisting communication infrastructure. In MANETs, under the arbitrary movement of nodes and highly dynamic topology conditions, the routing protocols for fixed networks do not perform well. To adapt to the rapid change of topology, many routing protocols have been proposed. However, most of them chose the minimum hop-count routes. This choice can lead to significant reduction of the network performance because communication quality via the chosen links is not good. Thus, the evaluation of link quality is indispensable and interference is a key factor to be considered. In the literature, most of the existing interference-aware protocols are single path and the consideration for interference range is limited. Several proposed interference-aware multi-path protocols for MANETs are either not highly efficient or have the computational complexity of NP-hard.To tackle the above problems, we first determine an interference region of each link including all nodes that can interfere with this link. Then, we propose a formula to evaluate the interference level of each link. Based on the formula of the link interference, we develop a series of interference-aware multi-path routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks. These interference-aware multi-path routing protocols minimize the impact of interference on the paths from the source to the destination to increase the network performance. The computational complexity of the protocols is polynomial and each of them is most suitable for a type of network size. To demonstrate the efficiency of the interference-aware multi-path routing protocols, we compare them to prominent protocols in different network sizes and a high mobility environment when the RTS/CTS (Request-To-Send/Clear-To-Send) mechanism is alternatively turned on and turned off. The simulation results show that our protocols significantly improve packet delivery fraction, and reduce end-to-end delay, routing overhead, and normalized routing load.The RTS/CTS mechanism is to restrict the collision caused by the hidden terminals. However, we indicate that the RTS/CTS mechanism is not suitable for mobile ad hoc network based on the simulation results.

A mobile ad hoc network is a collection of autonomous nodes connected to each other in a peer-to-peer fashion on a wireless medium. Such networks are used in emerging applications which require co-operative mobile data exchange in areas where there is little or no infrastructure available or where providing such infrastructure is not cost effective. Efficient dynamic routing is a major research challenge in such a network. Multipath routing provides a strong potential for efficient routing by maintaining multiple routes. This provides some form of fault-tolerance, as alternate paths can be used when one breaks. Also, data packets can be forwarded via multiple paths concurrently thus exploiting a larger network capacity. However, CSMA (carrier-sense multiple access) being a dominant form of channel access protocol in mobile ad hoc network, multipath forwarding is often unable to exploit its full potential. This is because multiple paths may form in each others2 radio neighborhood limiting spatial diversity. Data transmission in one path causes sufficient interference in another such that only one path can be used at a time. This phenomenon has been known as 3route coupling.4 We investigate the use of multichannel CSMA-based medium access protocols to reduce the impact of such route coupling. We use two such multichannel protocols to demonstrate that a significant throughput improvement is possible at high offered loads relative to the single channel CSMA for multipath data forwarding scenarios. One of the protocols chooses the channel based on interference power measurement at the sender. The other chooses a unique channel for each path. Our study shows that the multichannel protocols are able to limit the impact of interference between neighboring transmissions effectively.

Wireless ad-hoc networks are characterised by lack of infrastructure and frequent topological changes. Traditional routing protocols seek only single paths to the desired destinations, while multipath routing obtains multiple paths for only marginal additional overhead. This work argues that multipath routing is advantageous, even allowing for the additional overheads, because of the improved network load distribution. The merits of multipath routing are shown through extensive performance evaluation considering packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay and routing efficiency, for both mobile and static scenarios. The second aspect of the thesis addresses energy awareness. When a single connection is considered, multipath routing can potentially consume more total energy compared to its unipath counterparts because some traffic can traverse longer (in terms of hop count) paths. On the other hand, unipath routing concentrates nodal traffic over the same single path; resulting in unfairness for the intermediate hops and uneven energy consumption which, in turn, can result in network partitioning. Here, it is argued that multipath routing extends the network lifetime, because the routing protocol can make more sophisticated decisions to avoid node exhaustion. Two novel energy aware routing schemes, which select optimal paths to homogenise the energy map of the network, are presented. A range of performance evaluation techniques are employed to demonstrate the merits of the proposed schemes, and it is shown that the approach of homogenising the network energy map mitigates against the effects of inevitable node outages cause by energy exhaustion and prolongs network lifetime.
