This report will be of interest to individuals and groups with a stake in the location and design of bus stops. These groups include public transportation organizations, public works departments, local departments of transportation, developers, and public and private organizations along or near bus routes. The research evaluated bus bulbs, an innovation in the design of bus stops found in several major North American cities. A bus bulb is a section of sidewalk that extends from the curb of a parking lane to the edge of a through lane. They are also known as curb extensions, nubs, and bus bulges.

Multimodal Evaluation of Passenger Transportation
Author: G. Scott Rutherford
Publisher: Transportation Research Board
ISBN: 9780309056632
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 96
Book Description
This synthesis will be of interest to transportation planners, environmental analysts, and government officials at the federal, state, regional, and local levels. It describes the state of the practice with respect to the procedures and methodologies used by planning agencies at all levels to plan and evaluate alternative multimodal passenger transportation and to integrate these plans with related land use and environmental issues. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the federal studies and guidelines that are available and presents the findings of an extensive survey of state, regional, and local agencies to identify the evaluation methods that are being used in the practice. Selected case studies for five types of modal evaluation are presented: intercity corridor, regional study, regional screening, urban corridor, and regional programming.

Moving the Bus Safely Back Into Traffic
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Bus stops
Languages : en
Pages : 96
Book Description
The difficulty experienced by transit buses in moving back into traffic safely from bus pullout bays has become a serious problem due to potential hazards between buses merging from the pullout bays and the surrounding traffic. Previous studies have determined the need to closely examine the engineering side of the Yield-to-Bus (YTB) program and develop effective countermeasures to address the issue. This study focused on the assessment of the safety and operational effects of the use of Yield-to-Bus Light Emitting Diode (YTB-LED) signs on the back of the buses. Two off-the-shelf YTB-LED signs were tested against the decal-only treatment currently used on the majority of the buses. The signs were tested in different roadway conditions. It was found that the YTB-LED signs have a positive effect in the yielding behavior of motorists without posing traffic safety issues. In addition to the YTB-LED signs testing, two transit agencies outside Florida were interviewed to obtain details regarding their YTB programs and educational campaigns. It was found that the main strategy used in their campaigns was ads on the back of the buses. One of the agencies suggested that proper YTB campaign evaluation is a key factor to ensure its continuity.
