The purpose of this study was to reveal which services provided by the NC State University Academic Support Program for Student Athletes had a significant correlation with the student athletes' academic success. Student athletes' grade point averages were used as a measurement of academic success. Partial correlation and Somer's D statistical formulas uncovered which academic services had a significant relationship to the student athletes' academic success. Good communication between the academic coordinator and coach, the helpfulness of the tutorial program, the accessibility of laptops during team travel, the expectation that the student athletes attend study hall, the use of knowledgeable tutors, and the expectation of becoming a professional athlete all had a significant correlation to the student athletes' academic success. Further explanations of these items as well as recommendations for further research are discussed.

The study utilized the logic model evaluation to ascertain the effectiveness of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) unit at a NCAA Division I research university located in the Western United States. The logic model evaluation provided a process to determine the extent to which the unit achieved its purpose and outcomes. The logic model evaluation can be tailored to the exact unit based on the short-term and long-term goals of the program. Based on the tenets of flexibility and adaptability, the logic model evaluation was selected as an appropriate tool for the study. Overall, the SAASS unit was perceived to be effective by its key constituent groups. The evaluation highlighted the importance of the athletic academic advisor in keeping students on track to graduation and communicating issues to administrators, coaches, and professors. Recommendations are provided to potentially improve the SAASS unit under study.

Since 1991, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has mandated academic support services for student-athletes at all Division I institutions. Today, there is a vast difference of athletic academic support units at Power 5 Conferences compared to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The resources at Power 5 Conference institutions are also immensely different at HBCUs although the main services provided are similar. Advising, tutoring, orientation, assessment of study skills, compliance checks, personal counseling, career counseling, student-athlete scheduling/advising, testing of academically at-risk student-athletes are all services that are provided at both Power 5 institutions and HBCUs but there is still a stark difference in academic success (ie. APR and GSR). The purpose of this study was to evaluate select athletic academic support service services to student-athletes at HBCUs that support student-athlete academic success and graduation. Additionally, this study looked at how specific academic support services promote academic success and graduation through the NCAA's APR and GSR annual metrics. There were three null hypotheses tested utilizing a multiple linear regression to evaluate the relationship between academic support services and academic success. This research demonstrates the effectiveness and the barriers of receiving athletic academic support for non-revenue generating teams and revenue generating teams.

Research indicates that community college student-athletes need to study and compete at institutions that offer programs that align with student-athletes' talents and needs. A lack of such alignment has been associated with negative outcomes for student-athletes as well as institutions (Lawrence, Mullin, & Horton, 2009). This goal of this program evaluation of the Athletic Academic Support Office (AASO) at County College was to furnish findings that would enable the AASO to operate in the most efficient manner possible, given available resources. This study employed three investigative strategies. First, a discrepancy analysis (Fox, 2011) was conducted to compare the current AASO structure and function to a set of nationally prescribed standards. Next, a series of interviews with stakeholders was conducted to assess their perceptions of the AASO and its ability to meet the needs of County College's student-athletes. The third strategy involved an examination of the statistical association between three sets of variables; (1) student-athlete characteristics, (2) their responses to a survey designed to assess the adequacy and quality of the support they and (3) indicators of their academic success, including; GPA, retention rate, units attempted and units completed. The findings of this study included recommended resources and experiences needed to ensure success among student-athletes of diverse backgrounds at County College. Findings included recommended strategies to effectively meet the needs of student-athletes prior to entering universities. Data collection tools and analysis methods employed in this study may be implemented by the AASO to monitor its progress towards meeting recommended and prescribed national standards.
