Book Description
There is now a wide spread interest in regions as a key focus in the organization and governance of economic growth and wealth creation. This important book considers the factors that influence and shape the competitive performance of regions. This is not just an issue of academic interest and debate, but also of increasing policy deliberation and action. However, as the readings in this book make clear, the very idea of regional competitiveness is itself complex and contentious. Many academics and policy makers have used the concept without fully considering what is meant by the term and how it can be measured. Policy formulation has tended to rush ahead of understanding and analysis, and the purpose of this book is to close this important gap in understanding. This book was previously published as a special issue of Regional Studies.

Book Description
Statistical information is an important tool for analysing changing patterns of urban development and the impact that policy decisions have on life in our cities, towns and suburbs. Urban Europe - statistics on cities, towns and suburbs provides detailed information for a number of territorial typologies that can be used to paint a picture of urban developments and urban life in the EU Member States, as well as EFTA and candidate countries. Each chapter presents statistical information in the form of maps, tables and figures, accompanied by a description of the policy context and a set of main findings. The publication is broken down into two parts : the first treats topics under the heading of city and urban developments, while the second focuses on the people in cities and the lives they lead. Overall there are 12 main chapters, covering : the urban paradox, patterns of urban and city developments, the dominance of capital cities, smart cities, green cities, tourism and culture in cities, living in cities, working in cities, housing in cities, foreign-born persons in cities, poverty and social exclusion in cities, as well as satisfaction and the quality of life in cities.

Book Description
Europe’s growth outlook has weakened notably in the wake of the global financial crisis, and policy-makers are understandably preoccupied with achieving a near-term rebound. But sustained growth can only be achieved by also addressing the structural causes of low growth. One such element is Europe’s relatively low spending on research and development (R&D), which hampers innovation and productivity growth. This study sheds light on this shortfall by decomposing R&D spending along different dimensions. It shows that Europe’s underinvestment in R&D is unevenly distributed across countries, regions and sectors. Strong economic forces underpinning this differentiation imply that misdirected R&D policies could be highly wasteful. Another key finding is that, by its sheer size, the services sector accounts for a substantial portion of Europe’s lag vis-à-vis the United States in terms of both R&D spending and productivity growth. This points to a continuing need to foster competition and deregulation in this protected segment of the economy, if higher economic growth is to be achieved.

Book Description
The urban environment is in a constant state of change, a constant state of ''becoming. Each period in history has had its specific driving forces for change and corresponding solutions for directing change towards the city imagined and desired at that time. But our current era differs dramatically from earlier epochs as it faces seemingly overwhelming forces like the depletion of fossil fuels and climate change with their unforeseen impacts on the urban. Through the framework of the scenario-thinking and research carried out within the Resources programme at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, this book embarks on a journey of understanding contemporary urban transformations in three cities - Shanghai, Los Angeles and Pune - each representing not only three major world economies, but three specific urban contexts. Looking beyond the crunch of climate change and depleting fossil fuels, the book brings together a multidisciplinary group of major thinkers and hopeful picture of an urban future in common.
