Les décharges électrostatiques (ESD) modélisées par le composant chargé (CDM) sont un problème de fiabilité majeur des circuits intégrés accentué par la réduction des dimensions des transistors CMOS. Cette thèse expose en détail la problématique associée au test CDM et à sa modélisation en vue de la prédiction de l'effet de la décharge sur le circuit pour ensuite le protéger efficacement par des protections intégrées. Le CDM est étudié à une échelle globale pour prédire l'influence du testeur ou du boîtier du circuit sur le courant de décharge et à une échelle locale pour simuler les contraintes électriques appliquées au circuit. Ces contraintes étant des courants de plusieurs ampères durant quelques nanosecondes, nous exposons différents moyens pour étudier le comportement des composants de protection pendant la décharge et nous proposons une nouvelle mesure pour étudier leurs déclenchements transitoires sur des stress de temps de montée d'une cinquantaine de picosecondes.

Ce mémoire traite de la protection des circuits intégrés contre les décharges électrostatiques (ESD), en technologie BiCMOS de puissance. Notre étude repose essentiellement sur la simulation physique bidimensionnelle et la caractérisation. Les tests industriels ne rendant pas compte du comportement dynamique des structures de protection lors d'une décharge électrostatique , nous avons dû mettre au point un banc de caractérisation impulsionnel, TLP (Transmission Line Pulsing). Deux principaux éléments de protection ESD ont ainsi pu être étudiés : le transistor bipolaire npn autopolarisé est une structure de protection courramment utilisée en technologie BiCMOS. Grâce à la simulation physique, nous expliquons son mode de défaillance et nous étudions l'effet de certains paramètres technologiques sur ses performances. Les résultats de simulation sont confrontés aux mesures expérimentales et à l'analyse de défaillance. L'efficacité de cette structure de protection est ensuite démontrée sur la sortie d'un inverseur CMOS. Le thyristor apparaît comme une structure de protection très robuste mais délicate à utiliser. Pour répondre à la spécification très sévère d'une application de l'électronique automobile, nous avons conçu une nouvelle structure de protection, le MILSCR (MIrrored Lateral SCR). La simulation physique nous a permis de comprendre son mode de défaillance et de l'optimiser pour l'application considérée. Les résultats expérimentaux démontrent sa grande efficacité à protéger contre les deux polarités de décharge électrostatique. Nous proposons enfin une méthodologie de conception des structures de protection ESD.

The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
