Le but de l'étude est de comprendre l'interaction entre le rayonnement infrarouge et les plaques thermoplastiques lors du thermoformage. L'étape de chauffage qui se produit avant l'étape de formage au cours de ce procédé permet d'amener le polymère à la température de formage avant la déformation de la plaque au contact d'un moule. La répartition de températures joue un rôle prépondérant sur la distribution des épaisseurs de l'objet thermoformé. Les thermoformeuses sont, en général, équipées avec des fours constitués par des émetteurs céramiques (infrarouge long max = 3 μm) ou plus rarement avec des émetteurs quartz (infrarouge moyen max = 1.2 μm) qui commencent à être employées en thermoformage. Pour comprendre l'interaction entre le rayonnement infrarouge et les polymères il est donc nécessaire de caractériser les propriétés spectrales des polymères de l'étude (l'ABS, le polystyrène et le polypropylène homopolymère) en émission, absorption, et réflexion. Un enjeu majeur est de réaliser des mesures non intrusives de températures dans le polymère en mettant en œuvre une métrologie thermique. C'est pour cela que le "démonstrateur de chauffage infrarouge" a été développé dans le but de réaliser des cartographies et des mesures de gradients de températures dans l'épaisseur du polymère au cours du chauffage. Ainsi les cartographies d'éclairements et de températures mesurées ont permis de valider le modèle thermique développé. Ce modèle est basé sur une méthode de lancer de rayons pour calculer l'éclairement dans le but de s'apparenter à la physique du rayonnement et ainsi de prendre en compte les réflecteurs des émetteurs qui peuvent être de géométrie complexes. Un couplage à l'approximation de Rosseland qui permet de prendre en compte le terme source et une diffusion 3D permet d'aboutir au calcul des températures du polymère au cours du chauffage.
