Une étude de la variabilité climatique des événements méditerranéens de précipitations intenses dans le Sud-Est de la France (HPE : High Precipitation Events) est proposée au travers de l'analyse des performances du modèle de climat à aire limitée ALADIN-Climat. La sensibilité des pluies extrêmes simulées à différents paramètres de configuration du modèle est évaluée dans un cadre d'étude idéalisé ou à travers des expériences pilotées par la ré-analyse ERA-40. Les tests de sensibilité portent sur le couplage dynamique de l'atmosphère avec le modèle de mer Méditerranée NEMO-MED8, l'application d'une technique de pilotage spectral, la taille du domaine d'intégration et la résolution horizontale (passage de 50 à 12.5 km). Seule l'augmentation de la résolution conduit à une modification des précipitations extrêmes. Une étude détaillée de la valeur ajoutée ainsi apportée est alors conduite. Les résultats obtenus avec ALADIN-Climat sont ensuite comparés à ceux issus de deux méthodes de descente d'échelle statistique : la méthode de désagrégation DSCLIM (Boé et al., 2006) et la méthode de détection développée par Nuissier et al. (2011). Il s'avère que les performances d'ALADIN-Climat à 12.5 km sont plus satisfaisantes que celles de la première méthode et au moins équivalentes à celles de la seconde, d'où l'on conclut que ce modèle constitue donc un outil adéquat à l'étude de la variabilité climatique des HPE. Un scénario de changement climatique A1B est alors réalisé avec ALADIN-Climat pour la fin du XXe siècle, et différentes méthodes sont proposées pour l'analyse des résultats. Elles suggèrent un accroissement de la fréquence d'occurrence et une intensification des HPE.

Plants, fungi, and viruses were among the first biological objects studied with an electron microscope. One of the two first instruments built by Siemens was used by Helmut Ruska, a brother of Ernst Ruska, the pioneer in constructing electron microscopes. H. Ruska published numerous papers on different biological objects in 1939. In one of these, the pictures by G. A. Kausche, E. Pfankuch, and H. Ruska of tobacco mosaic virus opened a new age in microscopy. The main problem was then as it still is today, to obtain an appropriate preparation of the specimen for observation in the electron microscope. Beam damage and specimen thickness were the first obstacles to be met. L. Marton in Brussels not only built his own instrument, but also made considerable progress in specimen preparation by introducing the impregnation of samples with heavy metals to obtain useful contrast. His pictures of the bird nest orchid root impregnated with osmium were revolutionary when published in 1934. It is not the place here to recall the different techniques which were developed in the subsequent years to attain the modern knowledge on the fine structure of plant cells and of different plant pathogens. The tremendous progress obtained with tobacco mosaic virus is reflected in the chapter by M. Wurtz on the fine structure of viruses in this Volume. New cytochemical and immunological techniques considerably surpass the morphological information obtained from the pathogens, especially at the host-parasite interface.

New Geographies journal aims to examine the emergence of the “geographic,” a new but for the most part latent paradigm in design today—to articulate it and to bring it to bear effectively on the social role of design. Although much of the analysis of this context in architecture, landscape, and urbanism derives from social anthropology, human geography, and economics, the journal aims to extend these arguments to the impact of global changes on the spatial dimension, whether in terms of the emergence of global spatial networks, global cities, or nomadic practices, and how these inform design practices today.
