Ce travail vise à décrire l'impact de la contrainte motrice sur le développement du langage oral. Suite à une étude réalisée dans le cadre d'un mémoire d'orthophonie (Rivière 2008), il apparaissait que malgré une prise en charge intensive et spécifique, les enfants présentant des dysfonctionnements du langage oral conservaient des difficultés principalement sur le versant phonologique. Dans la continuité de cette étude et en accord avec les données de la littérature, 1 'hypothèse d'une contrainte motrice trop importante semblait alors émerger. Le matériel utilisé, créé par Khomsi, est constitué de la batterie BILO 1 (Bilan informatisé de langage oral cycle 1) ainsi que de trois épreuves motrices: une évaluation des praxies bucco-faciales, une épreuve de dextérité manuelle et une épreuve de discrimination digitale. Il s'agit d'observer les liens entre les résultats aux différentes épreuves de la batterie et ceux obtenus lors de la passation des épreuves motrices. Deux recueils de données ont ainsi été réalisés: le premier est constitué d'un groupe de 149 enfants tout-venant de maternelle. Un second groupe comprend 89 enfants présentant des dysfonctionnements du langage oral et suivis en rééducation par des orthophonistes membres du groupe ORF (Orthophonie Recherche Formation). Ce mémoire a permis de souligner le lien étroit entre le langage et la motricité, particulièrement la phonologie et la proprioception (discrimination digitale). Les résultats vont dans le sens de notre hypothèse de départ selon laquelle les représentations phono logiques sont liées à des composantes motrices, plus spécifiquement la capacité à percevoir et ressentir le mouvement articulatoire.

Although speech-language pathologists are expected to be able to administer and interpret oral examinations, there are currently no screening tests available that provide careful administration instructions and data for intra-examiner and inter-examiner reliability. The Oral Speech Mechanism Screening Examination (OSMSE) is designed primarily for use by clinical speech-language pathologists. The examination could also serve, however, as a useful tool for oral myofunctional therapists, as well as physical therapists, dentists, and orthodontists interested specifically in speech. It is reliable, relatively easy and quick to administer, and appropriate for children and adults in either diagnostic or therapy settings. The OSMSE is intended to assess those anatomical structures and physiological functions that are most often considered to be potentially related to speech or language disorders. Structural and/or functional judgments included are organized on the OSMSE test form under categories of: lips, tongue, jaw, teeth, hard palate, soft palate, pharynx, breathing, and diadochokinesis. Results of a preliminary study with normal speaking subjects indicated that the OSMSE had satisfactory intra- and inter-examiner reliability after minimal training. The time required to administer the examination typically ranged from 5 to 10 minutes. (Author/GK)

Pottery is the most ubiquitous find in most historical archaeological excavations and serves as the basis for much research in the discipline. But it is not only its frequency that makes it a prime dataset for such research, it is also that pottery embeds many dimensions of the human experience, ranging from the purely technical to the eminently symbolic. This volume represents the culmination of an extensive research project that studied the development of linguistic form/function relations in narrative discourse. It is unique in the extent of data which it analyzes--more than 250 texts from children and adults speaking five different languages--and in its crosslinguistic, typological focus. It is the first book to address the issue of how the structural properties and rhetorical preferences of different native languages--English, German, Spanish, Hebrew, and Turkish--impinge on narrative abilities across different phases of development. The work of Berman and Slobin and their colleagues provides insight into the interplay between shared, possibly universal, patterns in the developing ability to create well-constructed, globally organized narratives among preschoolers from three years of age compared with school children and adults, contrasted against the impact of typological and rhetorical features of particular native languages on how speakers express these abilities in the process of "relating events in narrative." This volume also makes a special contribution to the field of language acquisition and development by providing detailed analyses of how linguistic forms come to be used in the service of narrative functions, such as the expression of temporal relations of simultaneity and retrospection, perspective-taking on events, and textual connectivity. To present this information, the authors prepared in-depth analyses of a wide range of linguistic systems, including tense-aspect marking, passive and middle voice, locative and directional predications, connectivity markers, null subjects, and relative clause constructions. In contrast to most work in the field of language acquisition, this book focuses on developments in the use of these early forms in extended discourse--beyond the initial phase of early language development.
