Introducción: El presente trabajo se enfoca en un estudio monográfico acerca de las técnicas del procesamiento de imágenes, sus características, aplicaciones y algunos modelos matemáticos que permiten ampliar y aclarar dichas técnicas. Con esto, se pretende brindar a las personas interesadas en el tema, un material de estudio como referencia bibliográfica o un documento de consulta que pueda ser útil para posteriores investigaciones. En primer lugar, se brinda una explicación detallada acerca de las técnicas del procesamiento de imágenes, las cuales están agrupadas en 4 principales: Adquisición, realce y mejora, segmentación y extracción de características. Luego, se hace un análisis comparativo de dichas técnicas, que permite destacar los beneficios de utilizar una u otra según sea la aplicación. Por último se elaboran unas conclusiones a partir de todo el estudio realizado y la experiencia del proceso investigativo que se llevó a cabo.
