The present volume is the second in the author's series of three dealing with abstract algebra. For an understanding of this volume a certain familiarity with the basic concepts treated in Volume I: groups, rings, fields, homomorphisms, is presupposed. However, we have tried to make this account of linear algebra independent of a detailed knowledge of our first volume. References to specific results are given occasionally but some of the fundamental concepts needed have been treated again. In short, it is hoped that this volume can be read with complete understanding by any student who is mathematically sufficiently mature and who has a familiarity with the standard notions of modern algebra. Our point of view in the present volume is basically the abstract conceptual one. However, from time to time we have deviated somewhat from this. Occasionally formal calculational methods yield sharper results. Moreover, the results of linear algebra are not an end in themselves but are essential tools for use in other branches of mathematics and its applications. It is therefore useful to have at hand methods which are constructive and which can be applied in numerical problems. These methods sometimes necessitate a somewhat lengthier discussion but we have felt that their presentation is justified on the grounds indicated. A stu dent well versed in abstract algebra will undoubtedly observe short cuts. Some of these have been indicated in footnotes. We have included a large number of exercises in the text.

El presente libro está diseñado para ser utilizado en un curso básico de estructuras algebraicas. El texto ofrece un panorama general de las estructuras de grupo, anillo, módulo y R-álgebra, y está diseñado para ser utilizado en un curso de un semestre académico (16 semanas). El capítulo 1 provee las nociones básicas y ejemplos de grupos de simetrías, tablas de grupo, conjuntos generadores y diagramas de Cayley. En este capítulo, nos enfocamos más en la conceptualización y visualización básica de los grupos que en la formalidad. Los capítulos 2 y 3, por otro lado, exponen las nociones básicas de subgrupo, subgrupo normal, isomorfismo, homomorfismos y grupo cociente, ofreciendo una perspectiva intuitiva de estos conceptos desde el coloreo de tablas de grupo y los diagramas de Cayley. El capítulo 4 está dedicado a presentar un panorama general de la teoría de anillos desde lo estudiado en los capítulos anteriores e incluyendo nociones nuevas, como los ideales primos y maximales. Finalmente, el libro introduce y provee ejemplos de R-módulos, R-submódulos y R-álgebras en el capítulo 5, apuntando a casos específicos como los Z-módulos (o grupos abelianos) y los F[x]-módulos, con el fin de despertar el interés del lector para continuar su estudio del álgebra. El texto se basa en la idea de "aprender haciendo", lo que permite que el estudiante redescubra por sí mismo ejemplos y propiedades básicas de estas estructuras. Navarro es profesor titular en la Universidad de Alicante, donde imparte docencia en las titulaciones de Matemáticas y Arquitectura Técnica. Sus líneas de investigación son los sistemas dinámicos, la manipulación simbólica y el estudio de la rotación de cuerpos celestes. El trabajo realizado en este último apartado, coordinado por la doctora Veronique Dehant del Observatorio Real de Bélgica, fue galardonado con el Premio Descartes en 2003.
