Book Description
Excerpt from Estimating Concrete Buildings The actual procedure of concrete construction is still very far from approximating standard practice. Still less has there emerged any generally accepted system for keeping track of the individual cost of the innumerable items that enter into this type of work. Hence no satisfactory basis has been supplied for making estimates in advance of the actual undertaking. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Estimate Cost of a Concrete Building The necessity to know the cost of a structure, after the plans have been drawn up, is to put engineering designs and computations in language that the business man or layman is able to perceive instantly, if that is what is desired. Buildings, more than any other kind of structure require an estimated cost for the reason that the men most interested in its design and completion are not of an engineering profession and are not trained to think along mathematical lines. After the plans of a building have been conpiled by an Architect, it is an engineer's problem, not only to design the steel work, but at the end to make an investigation of the cost of the building, which will enable himself, or his employer, to select a contractor, whose figure most closely approaches the cost estimated. The same method as was used for the estimate of the foregoing plans may be used for a building of any size. Book Description
Excerpt from Wright on Quantities: A Plea for a Better System of Estimating, Cost of Buildings in the United States Before touching on my subject this evening, may I say a word or two to those gentlemen present whom I have not the pleasure of knowing person-ally? Although an architect by profession, it may perhaps be stated that I have had opportunity of closely studying the practice of estimating upon bills of quantities, or, as it is more popularly termed, the Quantity System. Indeed, it is a subject in which I have always taken an active interest. I mention this, however, simply by way of explanation, which seems to be necessary, for I believe this is the first occasion in the history of San Francisco, and probably in the United States, when a practising architect has been honored with an invitation to address a body of contractors upon such a practical theme as Estimating - a subject which, perhaps, in some quarters, architects are not supposed to know much about, and I regard it as a good sign when a contractors organization is broad enough, and progressive enough, to invite an architect to address them upon such a practical and important topic. I regard the invitation as a great compliment. It gives me the greatest pleasure to be with you this evening, and I trust that we may have a full discussion of the subject at the close of my remarks. Book Description
Reinforced Concrete is a text co-authored by Albert Wells Buel and C.S. Hill. This is an in depth work intended for those working in the construction industry. Reinforced Concrete is a detailed examination of the use of reinforced concrete in construction, and is aimed squarely at engineers involved in the design and production of large projects. The work is divided into three parts, with part one authored by Buel and parts two and three authored by Hill. Buel's opening section provides the reader with formulas for calculating the proper usage of reinforced concrete in buildings. From there, in part two, Hill outlines practical examples of reinforced concrete used in a variety of different scenarios, including building construction and cement storage tanks. The book closes with a detailed section on various methods of construction, addressing buildings, bridges, foundations, conduits, and more. Buel and Hill's work is a highly technical affair intended for the professional. It is a well written and thorough examination of reinforced concrete, although the authors do assume the reader is already comfortable with a range of engineering principles. Reinforced Concrete tackles its subject matter with gusto. The authors bring a sense of passion, making this a surprisingly pleasant read. Book Description
Excerpt from Estimating Building Costs Learning to estimate buildings is not quite the same as learning a language, but it is often better to begin with a little book rather than a large one. This is a small book as compared with The New Building Estimator, of which twelve edi tions were issued up to date, but will be of great service to thousands who might at first consider the larger work too comprehensive. This book will act as a feeder to the other. An endeavor has been made here to present facts in plain language. I gained my knowledge of estimating through experience; but on looking back I can see how much time and guesswork would have been saved had I simply had a small reliable manual to give a fair idea of what others had accomplished in a certain number of hours; and what amount of material is required for the different parts of a building.
