Book Description
The essays selected here for translation derive largely from Thomasius's work on Staatskirchenrecht, or the political jurisprudence of church law. These works, originating as disputations, theses, and pamphlets, were direct interventions in the unresolved issue of the political role of religion in Brandenburg-Prussia, a state in which a Calvinist dynasty ruled over a largely Lutheran population and nobility as well as a significant Catholic minority. In mandating limited religious toleration within the German states, the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia (1648) also provided the rulers of Brandenburg-Prussia with a way of keeping the powerful Lutheran church in check by guaranteeing a degree of religious freedom to non-Lutherans and thereby detaching the state from the most powerful territorial church. Thomasius's writings on church-state relations, many of them critical of the civil claims made by Lutheran theologians, are a direct response to this state of affairs. At the same time, owing to the depth of intellectual resources at his disposal, these works constitute a major contribution to the broader discussion of the relation between the religious and political spheres.

Book Description
Excerpt from An Old Master and Other Political Essays Why has no one ever written on the art of academic lecturing and its many notable triumphs? In some quarters new educational canons have spoken an em phatic condemnation of the college lect ure, and it would seem to be high time to consider its value, as illustrative of an art about to be lost, if not as exemplary of forces to be retained, even if modified. Are not our college class-rooms, in being robbed of the Old-time lecture, and getting instead a science-brief of data and bibliog raphy, being deprived also of that literary atmosphere which once pervaded them? I've are unquestionably gaining in thor oughness; but are we gaining in thought fulness? We are giving to many youths an insight, it may be profound, into spe cialties; but are we giving any of them a broad outlook? Book Description
Excerpt from Essays on Practical Politics These two essays appeared originally in the Century. Both alike were criticised at the time as offering no cure for the evils they portrayed. Such a criticism shows, in the first place, a curious ignorance of what is meant by the diagnosis of a disease; for my articles pretended to do nothing more than give what has apparently never before been given, an accurate account of certain phases of our political life, with its good and bad impartially set forth. The practical poli tician, who alone knows how our politics are really managed, is rarely willing to write about them, unless with very large reservations, while the student-reformer whose political experience is limited to the dinner table, the debating Club, or an occasional mass-meeting Where none but his friends are present, and who yet seeks. In pamphlet or editorial column to make clear the subject, hardly ever knows exactly what he is talking about, and abuses the system in all its parts with such looseness of language as to wholly take away the value even from such of his utterances as are true. Book Description
Excerpt from Essays on the Civil War and Reconstruction: And Related Topics Of the essays included in this volume all but one - that on "The Process of Reconstruction" - have been published before during the last eleven years: four in the Political Science Quarterly, one in the Yale Review, and one in the "Papers of the American Historical Association. For the purpose of their present appearance all have been subjected to revision, which has resulted in some cases in considerable modifications. The first five essays are devoted immediately to various phases of the Civil War and Reconstruction. The last two, while not concerned exclusively with those topics, have nevertheless such a relation to the legal and political questions treated as to justify their inclusion in the volume. To the younger generation of reading men at the present day the military history of the Civil War is familiar or readily accessible; the constitutional and political history is neither. Excerpt from Political Essays Tried, then, by this test, it is evident that the representation which has been accorded to a limited number of persons in this country is far indeed from being of that kind to which the name is generally applied, - of that kind which is essential to free institutions. Among those to whom the subject is familiar its inequalities are sufficiently notorious but for the benefit of that numerous class to whom they are known only as anomalies and irregularities of no great importance and which it would be a pity to disturb for the sake of a theoretic symmetry, it is well that attention should from time to time be drawn to them.
