Book Description
A survey both of medieval biographical writings, and the problems of recovering medieval lives. Biography is one of the oldest, most popular and most tenacious of literary forms. Perhaps the best attested narrative form of the Middle Ages, it continues to draw modern historians of the medieval period to its peculiar challenge to explicate the general through the particular: the biographer's decisions to impose or to resist the imposition of order on biographical remnants raise issues which go to the heart of historical method. This collection, compiled in honour of a distinguished modern exponent of the art of biography, contains sixteen essays by leading scholars which examine the limits and possibilities of the genre for the period between 750AD and 1250AD. Ranging from pivotal figures such as Charlemagne, William the Conqueror and St Bernard, to the anonymous female skeleton in an Anglo-Saxon grave, from kings and queens to clerks and saints, and from individual to the collective biographies, this collection investigates both medieval biographical writings, and the issues surrounding the writing of medieval lives. Professor DAVID BATES is Director of the Institute of Historical Research; Dr JULIA CRICK and DrSARAH HAMILTON teach in the Department of History at the University of Exeter. Contributors: JANET L. NELSON, ROBIN FLEMING, BARBARA YORKE, RICHARD ABELS, SIMON KEYNES, PAULINE STAFFORD, ELISABETH VAN HOUTS, DAVID BATES, JANE MARTINDALE, CHRISTOPHER HOLDSWORTH, LINDY GRANT, MARJORIE CHIBNALL, EDMUND KING, JOHN GILLINGHAM, DAVID CROUCH, NICHOLAS VINCENT

Book Description
The practice of public history takes many forms and accommodates varied perspectives and interests, but the goal remains constant-to broaden the public's appreciation and understanding of the past. The twenty-six essays that comprise this volume provide an introduction to both the varieties of work in which public historians are engaged and the common purposes they share. Part I includes essays on the development of the field historically and the education of public historians. Parts II and III explore the diverse career paths and work contexts that define the field today. A new essay, On the Web: The September 11 Digital Archive, by James T. Sparrow of the University of Chicago, contributes to this discussion. Drawing upon their own experiences, the authors provide insight into the varied roles and responsibilities of public historians and delineate the special issues and factors that shape their work. Together they contribute to public history's efforts to redefine what it means to be a historian.

Book Description
Excerpt from Essays in History and Biography, Including the Defence of Mary Stuart The volume in which the Defence of Mary Stuart originally appeared went out of print a few weeks after it was published, and is now scarce and dear. I would have reprinted it at the time, but for one consideration. The speech of an Advocate is always open to the observation that it is - the speech of an Advocate. This rather recondite reflection had been expanded by more than one of my critics, who held that a tone of partisanship was thus given to what was in substance an unimpassioned and impartial "summing up." I would have liked, therefore, to have turned the argument into a less forensic channel, - to have made it a charge from the Bench rather than a pleading from the Bar. But the experiments I tried were not satisfactory; I found that a change of form involved radical reconstruction; and for that I had neither time nor patience. It is now reprinted almost exactly as it was written. One or two new paragraphs, however, have been introduced, and there are many additional notes.
