Book Description
What's it like to go from sitting two rows behind George W. Bush in church to explaining ass-less chaps to a two-year-old while wandering through the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco? Robin Dutton-Cookston grew up in a Texas town where the only chaps were found at the annual rodeo, yet she found herself peeing on the pregnancy stick while still unpacking the boxes in her hipster San Francisco apartment. Life in the mama-lane quickly straddled the great divide between red and blue states, and Robin learned to blend new age street smarts and deep-fried southern hospitality when raising her daughter. Take a trip to San Francisco Mamaland and sneak a peek into an odyssey of bumbling motherhood. It all takes place in a city where what passes as ordinary-same-sex mommies and daddies, creative facial piercings, rabid political rallies, and professional families who can't afford to buy a house-evokes gasps of shock and awe from folks back in Texas. On the way Robin covers universal parenting themes common to many mamas and daddies: breastfeeding chaos, naptime battles, life transitions, the quest for a sense of home, and the need teach her California child the subtle difference between east and west Texas barbeque sauce.

Book Description
First published in 1992. Epicureanism has had a long and complex history. This book is the first to chronicle this history, from its beginnings in Greece in the fourth century BC to its role in the development of philosophy and science in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Divided equally between the classical and post-classical worlds, The Epicurean Tradition is a notable contribution to classical scholarship and to the history of ideas.

Book Description
About the Book Classical pianist Renata DiMonte has abandoned a career with the symphony to entertain in the elegant Piano Bar and Lounge of the Claremont Arms, one of New York City's premier luxury hotels. Haunted by guilt following her mother's death, Renata finds solace in the music she has always longed to play, bonding closely with her audience for the first time./ However, five-star service is not all the Claremont Arms has to offer. There are rumors of paranormal phenomena-rumors that Renata ignores until she begins to have experiences she can't explain. Patrons she has never met will request songs, and without warning, their life stories reveal themselves to her, open books of pain and joy. Nothing frightening has happened-yet-but nothing about this is remotely normal, either. Are Renata's strange experiences simply flukes, products of an overactive imagination? Does the beautiful concert grand piano she plays possess supernatural qualities? Or is there magic in the music itself? About the Author Michaele Lockhart, passionate historian, author, and avid reader living in Tucson, Arizona, is acutely aware of the need for contemporary fiction that portrays and appeals to the vast spectrum of today's multigenerational readers. A registered nurse and former teacher, this author is also a talented landscape and nature photographer. Michaele is currently writing a mystery series set in the Southwest. "In this charming mix of fairy tale, allegory, and personal discovery, where each chapter is cleverly overlaid with the ambiance of contemporary music, Lockhart has produced a quite modern-day and mature love story." "-- Robert Hammond, author and playright, "The Nursery, Where Were We, "and" Don't Call Me Ishmael "Affirms the power of music to lead to love and to meaning." "-- Toby Fesler Heathcotte, author of" The Alma Chronicles

Book Description
This richly drawn ethnography of Samburu cattle herders in northern Kenya examines the effects of an epochal shift in their basic diet-from a regimen of milk, meat, and blood to one of purchased agricultural products. In his innovative analysis, Jon Holtzman uses food as a way to contextualize and measure the profound changes occurring in Samburu social and material life. He shows that if Samburu reaction to the new foods is primarily negative—they are referred to disparagingly as "gray food" and "government food"—it is also deeply ambivalent. For example, the Samburu attribute a host of social maladies to these dietary changes, including selfishness and moral decay. Yet because the new foods save lives during famines, the same individuals also talk of the triumph of reason over an antiquated culture and speak enthusiastically of a better life where there is less struggle to find food. Through detailed analysis of a range of food-centered arenas, Uncertain Tastes argues that the experience of food itself—symbolic, sensuous, social, and material-is intrinsically characterized by multiple and frequently conflicting layers.
