Specifically, the hearing's purpose was to examine the EPA's progress in implementing the Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA), wherein the agency was responsible for providing guidance regarding the removal of asbestos from public schools. The report contains statements, letters, and testimonies of EPA and AFL-CIO representatives, and Hall-Kimbrell Environment Services, a company fined by the EPA for failure to consider sheetrock and hard plaster wall systems as potential containers of asbestos. Asbestos in the Schools opens with a brief overview of the history of asbestos, its use in industry and as a fire retardant, and the discovery of occupational hazards associated with asbestos dust airborne.
