Book Description
This book addresses digital document enhancement and restoration in these settings. Topics covered include the language and working definitions of the field, current industry practices, the document image class, logic-based image processing within that setting, and algorithms for performing enhancement and restoration of digital documents. Statistical optimization of nonlinear algorithms is treated in considerable depth. Simple idealized examples as well as difficult realistic problems are used extensively throughout the text to illustrate concepts and techniques, and to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods.

Book Description
Thisvolumecontainspapersselectedforpresentationatthe6thIAPRWorkshop on Document Analysis Systems (DAS 2004) held during September 8–10, 2004 at the University of Florence, Italy. Several papers represent the state of the art in a broad range of “traditional” topics such as layout analysis, applications to graphics recognition, and handwritten documents. Other contributions address the description of complete working systems, which is one of the strengths of this workshop. Some papers extend the application domains to other media, like the processing of Internet documents. The peculiarity of this 6th workshop was the large number of papers related to digital libraries and to the processing of historical documents, a taste which frequently requires the analysis of color documents. A total of 17 papers are associated with these topics, whereas two yearsago (in DAS 2002) only a couple of papers dealt with these problems. In our view there are three main reasons for this new wave in the DAS community. From the scienti?c point of view, several research ?elds reached a thorough knowledge of techniques and problems that can be e?ectively solved, and this expertise can now be applied to new domains. Another incentive has been provided by several research projects funded by the EC and the NSF on topics related to digital libraries.

Book Description
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third Pacific Rim Symposium on Image and Video Technology, PSIVT 2008, held in Tokyo, Japan, in January 2009. The 39 revised full papers and 57 posters were carefully reviewed and selected from 247 submissions. The symposium features 8 major themes including all aspects of image and video technology: image sensors and multimedia hardware; graphics and visualization; image and video analysis; recognition and retrieval; multi-view imaging and processing; computer vision applications; video communications and networking; and multimedia processing. The papers are organized in topical sections on faces and pedestrians; panoramic images; local image analysis; organization and grouping; multiview geometry; detection and tracking; computational photography and forgeries; coding and steganography; recognition and search; and reconstruction and visualization.

Book Description
Inventors at Work: The Minds and Motivation Behind Modern Inventions is a collection of interviews with inventors of famous products, innovations, and technologies that have made life easier or even changed the way we live. All of these scientists, engineers, wild-eyed geniuses, and amateur technologists have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of that singular Eureka! moment in their laboratories or garages. Each has altered the modern world as we know it in some significant way. The conversations will show budding tinkerers, professional inventors, educators, and onlookers how the top minds in the field come up with ideas and manage the first steps of inspiration, how they experiment productively, how they “sell” ideas to others and secure funding, how they execute the final product, and how they commercialize and protect their work. All inventors will learn from these conversations, whether they are exploring new chemical compounds in million-dollar labs or perfecting a household gadget or toy in a basement workshop. Author Brett Stern, an inventor himself, explores with each inventor the nature of creativity and intuition, the skill set needed, and the force, motivation, or desire that must be summoned to spend endless hours searching for an answer to a question that no one else has asked or solving a problem most think has no solution. The book is required reading for all technical and creative individuals to better understand the innovation process and the logistics of following through on an idea that has the potential to change society. This book offers: Interviews with inventors of world-changing products and technologies An outline of the steps required in the creative/inventing process whether the goal is a civilization-changing process or a device meant to impress friends and family and perhaps earn license fees. An instructive overview of how to solve problems in innovation—and how to use failures as stepping stones to successful inventions

Book Description
Mathematical morphology is a powerful methodology for the processing and analysis of geometric structure in signals and images. This book contains the proceedings of the fifth International Symposium on Mathematical Morphology and its Applications to Image and Signal Processing, held June 26-28, 2000, at Xerox PARC, Palo Alto, California. It provides a broad sampling of the most recent theoretical and practical developments of mathematical morphology and its applications to image and signal processing. Areas covered include: decomposition of structuring functions and morphological operators, morphological discretization, filtering, connectivity and connected operators, morphological shape analysis and interpolation, texture analysis, morphological segmentation, morphological multiresolution techniques and scale-spaces, and morphological algorithms and applications. Audience: The subject matter of this volume will be of interest to electrical engineers, computer scientists, and mathematicians whose research work is focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of nonlinear signal and image processing. It will also be of interest to those working in computer vision, applied mathematics, and computer graphics.
