Book Description
This volume is designed for the students who can speak English quite fluently at elementary level, would like to improve their speaking skills and transit into intermediate level. The book is aimed at the development of the learner's fluency in speech through fluency practice drills. The volume contains 40 dialogues and 80 fluency practice stories. Each dialogue is followed by two stories which are summaries or free interpretations of the conversation narrated by the participants of the dialogue. The material of the volume includes more complex grammar like Past Tenses, Reported Speech, Passive Voice, Conditional Sentences and other complicated structures. The series is based on the Speech Plasma Method. The Speech Plasma Method uses special Speech Fluency Drills to generate a super active area, "speech plasma" thus producing all the necessary conditions for spontaneous, automatic speech. Once created in your mind, speech plasma acts as a stimulator for further language learning. The bigger and stronger your speech plasma grows, the more fluently you speak, the easier it is to absorb new words and grammar rules, the faster you read, and the better you understand oral texts.

This collection of stories on fifty topics will help students of English go through the most vulnerable period of learning - pre-intermediate level. At this stage students do not see their progress clearly enough and often feel increasingly anxious and frustrated. All the fifty stories are accounts of Julia's everyday life. Being a real person Julia tells her stories in a very natural way revealing her own style and manner, repeating the same grammatical structures and word combinations. As a result, students easily remember the stories, speaking more and more fluently. Fluency practice drills that accompany each topic accelerate the transition from pre-intermediate into intermediate level. The series is based on the Speech Plasma Method. Book Description
This book is part of a series which aims to help English Language Learners to become fluent in Spoken English. It is the first in a planned series of three and caters for those Learners who are ready to move up to the ESL (English as a Second Language) Pre-Intermediate level in Spoken English. We begin here because, in terms of the spoken language, the leap from the Elementary to the Pre-Intermediate level is one of the biggest hurdles faced by English Language Learners. It is one of the greatest hurdles because it is at this stage that the Learner must move from simple spoken forms to a degree of fluency that begins to use more complex forms of the language. It is the first major hurdle that very many Learners cannot get over. As a result, it is at this point that a Learner can become stuck and either give up trying to become fluent in Spoken English or fail to make any real progress in comparison to their writing and reading skills. There are two main reasons why this happens. The first is that native English speakers do not speak the language in the same way that they write it. The spoken word very often bears little or no resemblance to the written word. The second is that a Spoken language must be learnt - it cannot be taught. By this we mean that, while all learning is a two-way process between the instructor and the learner, when it comes to learning to speak a language, something more than 80% of the work must be done by the Learner on their own. One of the obvious areas where this is true is in the need to learn vocabulary. To become fluent in a spoken language, a great many new words must be learnt - and only the Learner can do that. The instructor cannot learn them for him. How that vocabulary is learnt is a large issue. By far, the vast majority of Learners try to do this by memorising list of English words and their equivalent meanings in their native language. This does not. In this book you will discover a new way to learn the vocabulary that you need, and how to make it fun to learn. The emphasis in this book is on practical use of the language. In each Unit, Learners are given the opportunity to extend their vocabulary and to practice speaking the language of the native speakers. We have called this Idiomatic Spoken English, or everyday English. All of the examples and dialogues in this book use this language. It is not slang (or street language) but a language that uses all the shortcuts and tricks that native speakers use to keep a fluent and rhythmic flow of words when they speak. Successfully reproducing the rhythm of English (Enunciation) is one of the main secrets of being able to speak the language fluently. In this book we describe how that rhythm is actually built up and use the work of some of the great English poets to help the Learner to get a feel for the very beautiful cadences that English is capable of. Each Unit includes a full poem (or occasionally an extract from a very long poem) with notes about the rhythm (metre) of the poem together with its meaning and background. Of no less importance than Enunciation is Pronunciation. All Learners, no matter what their native language might be, have some difficulty in pronouncing English correctly. For this reason, great emphasis is placed on the Sounds of English, and each Unit includes examples and rigorous exercises for two of the 44 sounds that make up the English language. The first three Units of the book set out the essential foundations of The Nutshell Way to learn to speak English fluently. Some of the six basic principles (introduced in Unit One) on which this is based may well surprise many Learners (and not a few Instructors). But our experiences as Instructor and Learner have shown us that this radical approach is not only workable but absolutely necessary if A Learner is to clear the hurdle and Learn to speak fluent English with confidence.

Book Description
LEVEL The book is intended mainly for pre-intermediate students - students who have already studied basic English conversation. It concentrates on words that pre-intermediate students want to use, but often cause difficulty. Some advanced students who have problems with essential conversation words will also find this book useful. The book is not suitable for the elementary learner.HOW THE BOOK IS ORGANIZEDThere are 58 units in the book. Each unit concentrates on a particular speaking topic. For a list of units see the contents page at the beginning of the book. Each unit consists of two facing pages. On the left, there is vocabulary and sentence examples. On the right, there are questions and paragraphs. HOW TO USE THE BOOK The units are not in order of difficulty, so it is not intended that you work through the book from beginning to end. Every learner has different problems, and students should use this book to help them with the unit they find difficult. It is suggested that students work in this way: Use the contents page to find which unit deals with the topic the student is interested in. Study the vocabulary and sentences on the left-hand page of the chosen unit.Use the right-hand page to read the questions and paragraphs. TO THE TEACHERSpeak Fast was written as a self-study book for students, but teachers may also find it useful as additional course material in cases where further work on conversation is necessary. The book will probably be most useful at the pre-intermediate level (where all, or nearly all, of the material will be relevant). It can serve both as a basis for revision and as a means for practicing new sentences. It will also be useful for some more advanced students who have problems with common words and need a book for reference and practice. The book is not intended to be used by elementary learners. The units are not ordered according to level of difficulty, so the book should not be worked through from beginning to end. It should be used selectively and f flexibly in accordance with the topic areas students need to work on.The book can be used for immediate consolidation and for revision or remedial work. It might be used by the whole class or by individual students needing extra help. The left-hand pages are written for the student to use individually, but they may be used by the teacher as a source of ideas and information to base a lesson plan. The student then has the right-hand page as a record of what has been taught and can refer to it in the future. Additionally, individual students can be directed to study certain units of the book by themselves if they have difficulties not shared by other students in their class.

Book Description
Listening-Reading-Writing-Speaking-Comprehension-Pronunciation-Vocabulary!Author's GreetingsGreetings teachers and students! This book was written for the sole purpose of bringing aboutactual improvement in the level of English of students who are stuck for a long time at the preintermediate level. In spite of numerous lessons, sometimes pupils seem to show no improvementin their overall English level and their performances in listening, reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary and pronunciation. The reason is not always evident and the text books or teachersor students cannot be blamed directly or indirectly. Too many factors govern a person's progresswhile learning a foreign language and there are no immaculate books or curricula that can domagic with English language studies. However, I have tried to make this book enjoyable andfunny so that students enjoy the learning process and also willingly work hard to see their ownprogress. I have also included a note to the teachers, describing in details the methods of usingthis book to its full effects. I hope the book serves its goal and satisfies students and teacherseverywhere in the EFL / ESL field. Cheers! -NeilNote to teachersGuidelines for effective use of this bookRead the passages in each lesson slowly and clearly for the students so that they can listen tothe pronunciations and the flow and intonations of the sentences. Read twice if necessary.Ask the students to read the passage slowly and clearly. The probable new and difficult wordshave been listed out in the vocabulary / pronunciation section. Pronounce each word for thestudents to listen and repeat. Ask the students to make sentences with each word in the list.Give them examples if they are unable to grasp the contextual meanings of the words.Ask the students to read the passage again using the right pronunciations. Thereafter, proceedwith the dialogues to give the students a fair idea about how people generally talk undersimilar circumstances. The Conversations are role playing games in which the teachers andthe students both participate. This is a fun-activity.After this, go on to ask them the comprehension questions. Make them speak as much aspossible and ask them to avoid giving answers in monosyllables like 'Yes' or 'No.' They mustsupport their answers with reasons and descriptions if required. Help them with hints if theyget stuck. Follow up with the general conversation questions (related to the texts in eachlesson) to make the students think and come up with their own answers. After each lesson there is an activity page and it is a good opportunity to introduce more newwords to the students. Describing pictures or speaking on pre-defined topics will helpstudents speak more and more and gain more confidence while speaking. The book can be used as a workbook and the students can write down answers and noteswhile they study. At the end of each lesson, ask the students if they had had any difficulty withany part of the lesson and review that part again. Overall, please do not be in a hurry to finishthe book! This book can be repeated twice to give the students a more thorough practice ofEnglish. Good luck and happy teaching. -Neil

Book Description
This volume brings together researchers in conversation analysis who examine the practice of alternating between English and German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish and Vietnamese in the classroom. The collection shows that language alternation is integral to being and learning to become a bilingual, and that being and learning to become a bilingual are accomplished through a remarkably common set of interactional objects and actions, whose sequential organisations are quite similar across languages and educational sectors. This volume therefore shows that having recourse to more than one shared language provides an important resource for getting the work of language learning and teaching done through an orderliness that can be described and evaluated. The findings and the suggested pedagogical applications described in the volume will be of significant interest to researchers and teachers in a range of fields including second and foreign language teaching and learning, conversation analysis, teacher education and bilingualism.
