Book Description
Excerpt from Standard English Prose: Bacon to Stevenson This collection is intended for students of literature rather than for those who are chiefly occupied with the historic changes in the language, with the various forms of prose composition, or with the peculiarities of prose style. The plan and purpose of the book have imposed limitations which I could not refuse to recognize. A short passage, or even a single paragraph, may he sufficient to illustrate an author's language or style; but such fragmentary passages are almost useless to the student of literature. If we are to enjoy a work as a piece of literature, we must, if possible, read the whole of it; at the least we must read enough of it to enter into the authors purpose, to put ourselves in sympathy with his spirit. My object, then, required selections that should be, so far as possible, complete in themselves, and it involved the assignment of a relatively large amount of space to each writer included. I have accordingly confined myself almost entirely to essays, sketches, and such short forms of composition as could be given without abridgment, and I have reluctantly passed over many writers, in order to gain space for the more adequate representation of a few. To compensate for these omissions, so far as I could, I have added in an appendix short extracts or single paragraphs from a few writers prior to Bacon, as specimens of language and style. One selection in the appendix, however (that from the Morte d'Artkur), has so pronounced a literary value that I have used a modernized version, in which it could be more readily understood and enjoyed. Book Description
Excerpt from Readings in English Prose of the Nineteenth Century This volume appears in continuation of the plan which was initiated with a collection of Readings in English Prose of the Eighteenth Century, and with a single exception is made in accordance with the same principles: that is, it undertakes to give a sufficient body of prose readings for the use of those engaged in the general study of English literature in the period in question. In the nineteenth century, however, the mass of material is so great that it has seemed best to abandon the effort to represent the minor prose writers, of interest less for intrinsic worth than for their relation to particular ideas and movements, and to confine the volume to those of major importance in pure literature, exclusive of fiction. While many of the names thus omitted (such as Southey and Leigh Hunt, for example, in the earlier period, and Borrow and Leslie Stephen in the later) are tantalizingly attractive, yet the thirteen chosen writers stand out so clearly from among their contemporaries that it happens that not a single additional name was recommended for admission by those critics who were kind enough to look over the editor's list. Besides these space has been found - rather illogically, but on what appear to be imperative grounds of utility - for some representation of the great reviews of the early nineteenth century; for to study the age of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Keats without some acquaintance with the reviewers is out of the question, and their work is usually more inaccessible than anything else in this volume. Complete compositions, other things being equal, have of course been preferred - or sections, chapters, and the like, having the same independent character. Where omissions have been made they are indicated scrupulously. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Book of English Prose: 1470-1900 When called upon to justify the scanty time allotted in English education to the national litera ture, defenders of the grand old fortifying classical curriculum. Have often pointed out that nobody acquires the art of writing Latin prose without inci dentally bestowing close attention upon a number of the choicest pieces of English prose offered for the purpose of translation. For those students of Latin who reached the standard of a good sixth-form, or of classical honours at a university, the defence was not without reason; though for the reduced number of classical students to-day it is possibly less adequate than it was, since the modern desire to find interesting and novel material sometimes leads the teacher or examiner to select a tricky piece of current journalism in preference to a model of pure style, just as it leads him in dealing with younger pupils to displace Caesar and his battalions in favour of a dialogue about a half-holiday and a cricket match.
