Automation is nothing new to industry. It has a long tradition on the factory floor, where its constant objective has been to increase the productivity of manufacturing processes. Only with the advent of computers could the focus of automation widen to include administrative and information-handling tasks. More recently, automation has been extended to the more intellectual tasks of production planning and control, material and resource planning, engineering design, and quality control. New challenges arise in the form of flexible manu facturing, assembly automation, and automated floor vehicles, to name just a few. The sheer complexity of the problems as well as the state of the art has led scientists and engineers to concentrate on issues that could easily be isolated. For example, it was much simpler to build CAD systems whose sole objective was to ease the task of drawing, rather than to worry at the same time about how the design results could be interfaced with the manufacturing or assembly processes. It was less problematic to gather statistics from quality control and to print reports than to react immediately to first hints of irregularities by inter facing with the designers or manufacturing control, or, even better, by auto matically diagnosing the causes from the design and planning data. A heav- though perhaps unavoidable - price must today be paid whenever one tries to assemble these isolated solutions into a larger, integrated system.

In order to study the phenomenon of Database Management Systems (DBMSs) and their applicability in engineering, a CIAD Project Group (Association for Computer Applications in Engineering) was formed in The Netherlands comprising representatives from nine different companies and institutions. The main requirements laid down by the group were: (a) to formulate a set of demands which must be met by any engineering application of DBMSs; (b) to investigate whether or not the DBMSs selected provided adequate facilities to meet those demands; and (c) to provide a checklist covering all relevant aspects in selecting a proper DBMS. To investigate the applicability of DBMSs for engineering purposes, some prototype implementations were performed. These were based on a Codasyl-type DBMS and a relational-type DBMS. The applications involved included storage and manipulation of a finite element network. This detailed report of that study presents a comprehensive overview of existing Data Base Management Systems, gives the necessary selection criteria, and describes the practical experiences gained by the group in applying database systems.

Process Control Systems (PCS) are distributed control systems (DCS) that are specialized to meet the requirements of the process industries. Many processes and plants of that domain have high safety and availability requirements, are instrumented with a large number of sensors and actuators and show a rather high degree of automation at least in standard operation regimes. Thus, it is not surprising, that there is an ongoing discussion if each domain of the process industries, namely chemicals, pharma, pulp & paper, oil & gas, food & beverages and water/waste water treatment should have its own specialized automation system. On the contrary, there are some opinions that PCS architectures that address all of the distinct requirements of the process industries, should even be generic enough to render the distinction between PCS and e.g. DCS for power generation and distribution a merely marketing or historical issue, not a technical one.This text book contributes towards that discussion simply by putting its focus on PCS engineering basics that are common to the different domains of the process industries. The examples and exercises are related to an experimental research plant which serves for the exploration of the interaction between process modularization and process automation methods in the process industries. This makes it possible to capture features of highly specialized and integrated mono-product plants (e.g. chemicals) as well as application areas which are dominated by locally standardized general-purpose apparatus and multi-product schemes (bio-chemistry, pharma). Computer-aided design syst,ems have become a big business. Advances in technology have made it commercially feasible to place a powerful engineering workstation on every designer's desk. A major selling point for these workstations is the computer aided design software they provide, rather than the actual hardware. The trade magazines are full of advertisements promising full menu design systems, complete with an integrated database (preferably "relational"). What does it all mean? This book focuses on the critical issues of managing the information about a large design project. While undeniably one of the most important areas of CAD, it is also one of the least understood. Merely glueing a database system to a set of existing tools is not a solution. Several additional system components must be built to create a true design management system. These are described in this book. The book has been written from the viewpoint of how and when to apply database technology to the problems encountered by builders of computer-aided design systems. Design systems provide an excellent environment for discovering how far we can generalize the existing database concepts for non-commercial applications. This has emerged as a major new challenge for database system research. We have attem pted to avoid a "database egocentric" view by pointing out where existing database technology is inappropriate for design systems, at least given the current state of the database art.
