Book Description
Excerpt from Elzevir Classics, Vol. 3: Being Choice Selections Reprinted From the Elzevir Library While the Aryan civilizations, described in the last chapter, were developing themselves peacefully side by side, in the extreme west of the Asiatic continent, the region which juts out toward Europe, and is known by the name of Asia Minor, the more central portion of the Continent - the Mesopotamian Plain, the great Iranic Plateau, and the Peninsula of Hindostan - was the scene of a struggle, not always peaceful, between three other types of human progress and advancement, which in those parts contended for the mastery. Two of these were, like the west-asian civilizations, Aryan, while one, the Assyrian, was of an entirely different character. It is this last to which we propose to give the foremost place in the present chapter, not that we should assign it a priority of beginning over the other two, but inasmuch as it reached earliest its full de velopment, and so belongs, on the whole, to a more remote period in the world's history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy.
