Excerpt from Elements of Medical Zoology "Fabulous Helmintha," have been omitted. The place of these omissions has been more than occupied by other matter; all which additions are distinguished by being placed in brackets. The weights and measurements have been reduced from the French to the English scale, and are generally given in parts of the pound avoirdupois, or in fractions or decimals of the English inch. The principal responsibility which the Translator has taken upon himself in the way of alteration has been the addition of the passages already referred to. Some of the numerous synonymes of the names of the animals which M. Tandon has included in his work have been omitted, as being of little use to the student and apt to produce confusion. In one or two instances a different name has been made use of to the one proposed by the author; in all such cases the one adopted is that by which the animal has been generally known in England, and of which the use has been recently confirmed by its being retained in Küchenmeister's Manual of Entozoa. In no department of Zoology has greater confusion arisen from the want of a uniform nomenclature than in Helminthology. The Translator desires to return his best thanks to Professor Quekett for the information he kindly afforded him, particularly with regard to the Bothriocephalus latus; an obligation which will be found specially mentioned in its proper place. His acknowledgments are no less due to Mr. Chatto, the librarian of the College of Surgeons, for his ready and valuable assistance in searching for names and references in the books of the library. The illustrations have been accurately copied by Mr. Joyce from the original wood cuts, and three additional engravings have been added from other sources. Excerpt from Zoology for Medical Students This volume represents in book form the Lecture course in Zoology for medical students as it has evolved during recent years in the University of Glasgow. The task of designing and conducting a course in Zoology that will play its proper part in the education of the graduate in medicine is no light one. It is made immensely heavier by certain conditioning factors, above all in the case of our Scottish universities, by the compulsory limitation of the course within a period of ten weeks. This renders it necessary for the teacher to confine himself rigidly to those parts of the subject which can really justify the expenditure upon them of the necessary time from the short period available. In deciding what portions of the vast science of Zoology satisfy this condition, the teacher has to be guided by certain governing principles. Above all he must have clearly defined in his mind what he regards as the main objects of his course. So far as the present writer is concerned he has kept before him three objects which he believes to be of pre eminent importance. I. To awaken and develop, so far as the animal kingdom is concerned, interest in biological science. Medical students are training themselves to be efficient practitioners of a particular department of applied biology. It is of vital importance that they should become inspired at the earliest possible stage in their curriculum with a living interest in the study of the animal body. One of the first endeavours then of the teacher of Zoology should be to cast over the minds of his pupils some of the fascination of the most fascinating of sciences, so that they may pass on their way quickened and inspired by the stimulus of its interest. Excerpt from The Elements of Animal Biology This volume is intended as an introduction to the elements of animal biology for the use of students in the high school. The cut-and-dried method of exposition which is so commonly found in text - books and which so frequently deprives them of all traces of stimulating quality has been avoided so far as was deemed compatible with the presentation of such subject matter as a text-book should contain. Although the book would best fulfil its purpose if read in connection with laboratory work, I have not included directions for such work, partly be cause it would add considerably to the bulk of the volume, but chiefly because so many teachers nowadays prefer to make laboratory outlines of their own. The order in which the main topics are treated is essen tially like that which is followed in several of the best recent text-books. The general experience of teachers of biology has shown it to be eminently desirable that the student should possess a general knowledge of the animal kingdom as a preparation for the study of physiology. These are the essentials, and Should be conveyed by the teacher without undue bias as to the future studies of the student, and without particular reference to the problems which happen to be the fashion of the moment. Excerpt from Medical Zoology and Mineralogy, or Illustrations and Descriptions of the Animals and Minerals Employed in Medicine, and of the Preparations Derived From Them: Including Also an Account of Animal and Mineral Poisons The flesh is eaten by the natives notwithstanding its strong flavour of musk, and the skins are manufactured into bonnets and winter dresses, by the Tungusians and the Russians but the animal is chiefly hunted for the sake of the perfume. It is chiefly in the rutting season that the bag of the animal becomes filled with musk, when it diffuses a very strong and penetrating odour. At that period, irritated by its abundance, the creature rubs itself against rocks and trees, and thus occasionally ruptures the bag, and the musk escapes from it. The musk thus ejected is carefully gathered, from the places where it occurs, as it possesses in a very eminent degree, all the peculiar qualities of the musk; that which is taken from the bag, not being always mature. According to Tavernier, the best and greatest quantity of musk comes from the kingdom of Bontan, whence it is carried for sale to Patna, in Bengal. After killing the animal, the peasants cut off the bag, which is about the size of a pigeon's egg, and is situ ated nearer the organs of generation than the navel. As soon as the bag is cut away, a small hollow reed is inserted into it, that the musk may not suffer, which it would be apt to do from want of air, and the whole is tied round with a sinew of the animal.
