Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Physics The work will serve as a suitable text-book for any class beginning the study of physics. The author believes that in early lessons it is inadvisable to trouble the student either with theories, or with the generalisations that prove such a valuable aid to the advanced student little space has therefore been devoted to theoretical considerations. Experience as a teacher suggests that a careful examination of the facts of science is the first duty of a beginner. Book Description
Excerpt from Course in Elementary Physics The present pamphlet comprises the text of the first few chapters of an elementary work on Physics, designed to supplement the lectures delivered to the students of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology during the first two years of their course. It is intended to impart such a general knowledge of the science as will enable them with advantage to continue the pursuit of the subject in the more advanced work of the Physical Lab oratory. Book Description
Excerpt from Problems in Elementary Physics The problems in this book are intended to quicken a beginner's apprehension of the elementary principles of physics and to furnish a convenient means of testing his attainments. The subjects chosen are those at once usually taught in secondary schools and capable of easy illustration by quantitative experiments in the ordinary laboratory. While Statics and Dynamics, under Mechanics, receive special attention, because of their fundamental character, in the broad subject of Electricity only a few of the more important laws and of the commonest methods of measurement are illustrated. Though Static Electricity and Induced and Alternating Currents have not been attempted, some of the experiments involved in the other electrical problems included here are more elaborate than those in the earlier part of the book. The introductory sections review some portions of arithmetic which are needed in physical computations and which experience shows have to be presented in a new light before the average student can apply them with facility. Since explanations and statements of physical law take the shape of mathematical formulas wherever practicable, a good working knowledge of algebra and plane geometry is assumed. In general, algebraic methods are preferred to geometric, though not always. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Text-Book of Physics This book is primarily intended as a text-book for elementary classes of Physics. It aims at presenting, in brief space, those portions of Theoretical Physics which are most essential as a foundation for subsequent advances, while at the same time most fitted for exercising the learner in logical and consecutive thought. It does not give minute directions for manipulation; but, avoiding details as much as possible, presents a connected outline of the main points of theory. In order to place science upon an equal footing with the more established studies of ancient languages and mathematics, as a means of practically training the bulk of our youth to vigorous thought, it seems necessary that science text-books should be constructed upon such lines as these. It is not practicable to make the bulk of the boys in our public schools expert scientific manipulators; but it is practicable to ground them well in the main lines of scientific theory. The aim must be not so much to teach them many facts, as to teach them rightly to connect a few great facts together. Science must be taught them from a liberal, not from a technical stand-point.
