Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary English, Spoken and Written I. When you are told to give a talk or write a composition, the first thing to do is to decide what you are going to talk or write about. Usually this is made simpler for you by a list of subjects from which you may choose the one that most appeals to you. Some titles, of course, are much more definite than others. If a title is a very general one, you should limit the subject to some part of it with which you are familiar. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary English, Vol. 1 Outside of school the child speaks, just as his elders speak, not to express his thoughts, but to communi cate them to somebody else. In the schoolroom, also, he should be made to feel that he is not merely saying things but telling them, and that he is responsible for a clear and accurate expression of his thought, to the end that he may be clearly understood by others. Book Description
Excerpt from English Spoken and Written: Book I; Lessons in Language, for Primary Grades The books of this course in English are closely related in purpose, matter, and method. They aim to arouse in our boys and girls an abiding interest in the correct and effective use of the English of to-day as well as to give them a clear insight into the structure of the English language. This book has been carefully planned to meet the needs of primary grades in public and private schools. The authors have employed practically the same methods, and, in part, have used the same material as in the first book of "Modern English," which has met with such pronounced favor. Instead of relying upon technical grammar to mold the daily speech of children, emphasis is laid upon practice in speaking, reading, interpreting, and writing under the guidance of the teacher. The authors believe in the supreme importance of interest in successful language study. They have, therefore, spared no pains in determining upon the topics to be presented and in subjecting their choice to repeated tests in the schoolroom. The lessons are based upon home life, school associations, and familiar sights and sounds in nature. Pictures, stories, poems, exercises, suggested readings, have all been chosen in accordance with this plan, to the end that children may view language less as an unrelated branch of study than as a unifying medium for all school studies and out-of-school experiences. In developing the plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Good English Oral and Written, Vol. 1 This book is intended for use in the third and fourth years of the elementary school. The authors believe that children speak and write for the same reason that adults do - to tell something that is in their minds, something related to their own experiences, some thing that has a note of personal interest or preference or Opinion. Therefore, the material on which conversation and written exercises are based has been selected with refer ence to its living interest to children and its vital relation to their experiences. This material, moreover, has had thorough test in the classroom. It is now generally agreed that children learn to speak and write interestingly and effectively by speaking and writing under proper inspiration and guidance. Something to say and someone to say it to - an interesting subject and an interested audience - are prime requisites for growth of language power. In this, moreover, oral speech holds first claim on the atten tion of the school, because we speak more than we write. Throughout this text the authors have held clearly in mind these fundamental principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Methods in Elementary English: An Introduction to the Teaching of Good English in Speaking and Writing The book, however, is not intended for the beginner only. The experienced teacher will find in the General Suggestions, in the Language Games, and in the sections dealing specifically with the work of the first, second and third grades, material and suggestions appli cable to her own class, in whatever year it may be. By studying the provisions for the earlier grades and by visits to the classrooms of these grades, she will under stand clearly what her own pupils have already done and what the unified plan to which this book is an introduction requires that they shall do. All successful work in English composition, whether oral or written, is based on the formation of correct language habits by daily practice. Helping a child to understand that an expression is incorrect does little, if anything, towards overcoming his bad habit; a knowl edge of grammatical rules will not cause a child to em ploy accurate English. Only as he uses the proper expression often enough to make it his own - to make it habitual - will he use, in his unconscious choice of language, better English. In the upper grades the study of grammar will confirm and strengthen good habits already formed in the grades below, but grammar itself cannot be the basis of the children's correct choice of language. Good language habits should be formed long before the time arrives for studying technical grammar. In the choice of subject matter for the children's com positions, in the building of power in sentence and para graph structure, and in the games and other exercises suggested for use in corrective work, the aim of the authors has been to provide for the gradual and natural formation of habits of correct speech and writing.
