Book Description
Electrostatic Dust Mitigation and Manipulation Techniques for Planetary Dust explains how to control and remove dust in space due to the presence of a vacuum, abrasiveness of dust particles and electrostatic charge on particles. The book introduces innovative technologies that use electrostatic and di-electrophoretic forces to remove and transport small particles away from surfaces. In addition, it discusses how to resolve thermal control problems and reduce lung inhalation and eye irritation problems. The book includes two abrasive wear test devices that were designed to study the rate of volume wear for di?erent materials when subjected to lunar dust simulant of di?erent size ranges. This will be an ideal resource for space system engineers, space exploration researchers, and advanced students and professionals in space engineering. Provides a comprehensive background on lunar and Martian dust properties and challenges and compares currently available mitigation strategies Highlights the problems from dust on various space systems and crew Features discrete element models which were created and calibrated based on experimental results to study the capacity of the proposed technique for removing and cleaning dust in a planetary environment

Control of Charged Lunar Dust Using Electrostatic Technologies

Book Description
Protecting sensitive surfaces from dust deposition in the limiting condition of the lunar atmosphere is imperative for future space exploration. An electrostatic lunar dust collector (ELDC) was developed to prevent lunar dust deposition on the exposed surface equipment efficiently. First, Eulerian-based analytical equations were derived to interrelate key parameters. Application of electrostatic field strength of 20 kV/m was found to be enough for collecting particles up to 240 μm in size. Then, the Lagrangian-based discrete element method (DEM) was used to track particle trajectories individually. Inclusion of electrical particle-particle interactions and non-uniformity of the e-field provided a more accurate efficiency determination resulting in an e-field strength of 3.5 kV/m for 100% collection of 20-μm particles. How back electrostatic field due to charge build-up on the collection plates affect performance of an ELDC was then studied using a modified DEM model. The maximum time ELDC can run without significant loss in collection efficiency was estimated to be 3 times per month. Finally, the collection efficiency of the ELDC was investigated experimentally inside a vacuum chamber. The results indicated better tribochargeability of JSC-1A particles than Chenobi particles.
