Book Description
Electron-beam diagnostics for the Los Alamos free-electron-laser oscillator experiment have been designed to measure the time dependence of the electron energy distribution with time intervals ranging from 30 ps to 200 .mu.s. The electron beam consists of macropulses that have a 100-.mu.s duration and a 1-Hz repetition rate. Each macropulse consists of a series of micropulses that have approx. 30 ps duration, approx. 50 A peak current, and approx. 50 ns separation. The primary purposes of the electron-beam diagnostics is twofold: (1) optimization of the bunching system to provide a maximum peak current in the micropulses; and (2) measurement of the time dependence of the electron energy distribution during build-up of the photon field in the oscillator. Because the exact time of build-up is uncertain, provisions have been made to allow the observation window to be varied from 10 to 100 .mu.s and to be delayed by times up to 100 .mu.s.

Book Description
An electron beam diagnostic for the Los Alamos free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator experiment has been used to measure the time dependence of the electron energy distribution in a 100-.mu.s time interval. The electron beam consists of macropulses that have a duration of 100 .mu.s and a repetition rate of 1 Hz. Each macropulse consists of a series of micropulses that have approx. 30 ps duration, approx. 50 A peak current, and approx. 50 ns separation. The primary purpose of the electron beam diagnostic is measurement of the time dependence of the electron energy distribution during the build-up of the photon field in the oscillator. Since the exact time of build-up depends on various rf and cavity considerations, provisions were made to allow the observation window to be varied from 10 to 100 .mu.s and to be delayed by times up to 100 .mu.s. 5 references, 9 figures.

Pages : 586
Book Description
This book is the definitive tutorial text and reference work on free electron lasers. Since the publication of the first edition in 1992 there has been a significant increase both in the number of free-electron lasers in use worldwide, and in the understanding of the various regimes for these devices. In order to maintain the position of this book as the most comprehensive and thorough reference and tutorial in the field, the authors have completely updated the book. In addition to updates and corrections to chapters in the first edition, new chapters have been added.
